Winner winner chicken dinner..Burrito Grunt! I know that fish well, lived off them for over a month in Baja. You actually caught that in the estuary?? And at low tide? Wow.

Not in the Grunt family. It had fangs. In the snapper family???
joanC
did it "croak"
Shawno
With fangs it had to be a snapper. Probably a grey snapper. I've never caught one, but have seen them snorkeling near shore.

Where are you where the picture was taken?

Are they still letting people in to use the facilities for $100 pesos a day?

The fish he caught has a sweeping tail fin while the Burrito Grunts is smaller and forked.

I personally only been out to tess a handful of times, had some drinks (happy hour), pool was nice, great beach area no rocks, I don't know if they are still letting people use the facilities.

The locals call that fish a Pescado Extranjero, cause they can't identify it, I know Dan will correct me because he is an expert on extrajeros, they use them to deep fry as pargo at many places in town.

Thanks to everyone in trying to figure out the mystery fish. I caught this on the rocks at low tide in the 1st Estuary. It hit the lure about 15 ft from shore. It immediately went into the rocks. I was lucky to get him out, but since I was pretty much on top of him, I could pull him out. I have a lot of education in Fisheries Biology and can honestly say, I have never seen this fish. At first I thought this was a Colorado Snapper, after looking into some of the links that you guys sent, I think it might be a juvenile Pacific Dog Snapper. Don't blow me up on this, I am just speculating. I obviously don't know or I wouldn't of reached out to you all for help in this identification.

They are renting space out under some terms but do not know what the terms are. Some times lots of people coming and going on the weekend evenings and large bags of trash to be picked up. You can rent a condo there also.
I did not hijack the thread, YOU KNOW WHO DID !!
tequilatodd
so after all this fish talk, what did you do with it?

That fish is most likely a Golden Snapper, Lutjanus Inermis

Sspringer
The adipose fin and anal fin are not the same as in the fins of a Golden Snapper.
moore_rb
You said the fish had fangs - only corvina and snappers have canine teeth.... and your fish ain't a corvina.

Mullet snapper, golden snapper, and gray snapper all look very similar to each other when they are that size.

My money still says your fish was a golden snapper.

I know exactly what that fish is..........Bait

I only got the 1 pic but I can't seem to find it in the puffer family pics in the Mexfish data base. Any ideas?

Looks Like "Peñasco Carp"

It's a lost Striped Bass
Jungle Jim
Bullseye Puffer Sphoeroides annulatus.....

A deadly little treat. Mexicans use em as fly killers throughout the east side of Baja California. They split em open and hang them over their doorway next to the dried up "DIABLOS" used to ward off espiritos muy malo. The diablos are juvenile Shovel Nosed Sharks that have been carved up to look like they have four limbs and a long tail. The really creative people even paint em red.

As for the puffer, you will sometimes see them skinned and dressed up in the Fish Market in the Old Port advertised as "POLLO". Personally, I'm not into the game of Russian Roulette therefore would never eat one. And as a matter of fact try tossing one to a pelican, they will spit it out in an instant. Also, with hose four buck teeth that they have, they can cut a steel hook in half with ease.

Sphoeroides Pachygaster or Blunthead Puffer or Mexican Blowfish. They sell them at the fish market and they call them Chicken fish. I don't eat them.

chicken of the sea?
Hillbeartoe
Awesome ty for the ID, and yes it broke the hook trying to get it out. Was like trying to remove the sword from the stone if you catch my drift.
Hillbeartoe
Yeah, I knew it was a puffer and had no intention of chopping it up. I tried to get the pics quick and then get the hook out, as I said it broke but he was less than impressed by me. You can even see in his eyes he was pissed off lol.
Kelney
My boat's bait tank intake tube was clogged. Once I tore it a part I found this little guy stuck in an elbow fitting. Only puffer I have caught.
