Last night here. My reviews of restaurants!

Gas station in Ajo (Chevron?): we stopped here because we had a 40 minute wait to get through the immigration checkpoint at Midway. There was a medical emergency and they were landing a helicopter to get someone out. This gas station had Amazing burritos at the register. We tried chorizo & egg and steak & potato. They also had green chile and red chile. I thought those might be too messy for the car.

Tacos Brissas: Very good food, although limited menu. The Papa Rellena lived up to its reputation, and I liked that they served lots of extras - beans, the grilled jalapenos & onions, and the whole tray of different salsas & accompaniments.

Something Something con Flavio (along the water in the Malecon). Yucky. Expensive. Ordered mixed seafood grill and everything was rubbery. The ceviche was not chunky - it was ground together and almost a paste of fish. Breaded fish filets were thin and dry and bland. Should have known better than to eat there - there were only gringos in the place!

Puesto del Sol at Playa Bonita in Sandy Beach. Great view, and good for the kids who played on the beach while waiting for the food. Very overpriced. A canned Tecate was $3.00. Our lunch for 4 was $53 before tip. Good food, but not worth the price. It seemed a little tame (gringo-ized). Wouldn't go there again. There's too much other good food.

La Cita. Excellent. Chicken mole was tender and flavorful. It came with tortillas so thin you could see your hand through them. Also had the best shrimp cocktail I've ever had in Rocky Point. The breakfast menu looks really good and its either there or Ruby's tomorrow before we head out.

Azul. The pool bar at Bella Sirena. Much better than anticipated. Had 2 for 1 drinks happy hour. Ordered a shrimp basket, fish basket, shrimp tacos and fish tacos. The shrimp were HUGE and the serving on the basket was easily 1/2 pound. Very well cooked. The fish was flounder and it was delicate and moist and delicious. Also a HUGE serving. Easily 7-8 large pieces of fish. The tacos were 3 tacos each for $6 - a real bargain. The shrimp and fish baskets were $9 and $8.

I had a great time reading these boards to get some idea of where to eat. Thanks for the help and I hope my experiences help someone else.

Oh, also had Pollo Lucas. Good. An easy meal when you just want to sit "home" and eat on the deck.

Super Ley grocery store had really good produce and was better than the Fruiteria on Sinaloa.

Coke at the Oxxo is cheaper than the grocery store.

2 questions - what is the typical rate to tip at a restaurant? And ... Hmm, I forgot the other question. Oh well.

Totally agree with you about Flavios- what a waste of money. Puesto del Sol, mediocre at best and way gringo. Love La Cita. Love Pollo Lucas. Want to try the Papa Rellena but haven't yet. Great fish tacos at Viva Mexico on the Malecon. No view but great tacos, great service and they let you bring your own beer in. Haven't tried Azul Bar yet. I really wanted to try Pane y Vino but heard from a couple of people that the Chef treats his Mexican employees really badly.

Love La Cita - when it was at the Old Port - decades ago - all the fishermen ate there, my Dad included. Even then they had the best Mole and shrimp cocktails (shrimp was serviced in an old fashioned milk shake glass and I think the kids paid 25 cents - I could always locate them there in the afternoon). Agree about Puesto del Sol - had lunch there once at a major cost, poor service and food was't that good - never again. Never tried Flavios has never heard anything good about it.

Azul Bar has some really neat specials - as their Mother's Day Brunch - if Luca does something like that again (he is thinking of it) be sure to go. We also love Pane e Vino. Someone mentioned how Luca didn't treat his employees well. I've never seen anything to suggest that. All their employees that we have met have seemed very happy and welcoming. He and Karina are always introducing them and praising them to us. I've been to places where employees have not been treated well and it shows up in their demeanor - so my guess is that is just an unfair rumor.

Okay, had breakfast at Rosy's. Very very good! Lots of pancake options for the kids - one had pancakes with chocolate chips and the other had cherries.

I had carne deshebrada with fried eggs on top. OMG, yum! I need to make this at home. The carne was succulent and juicy lots of onions & peppers in it. The eggs were perfectly cooked, cooked but still runny. The yolk blended with the carne and it was a marriage made in heaven. I think I almost licked the plate. :)

Back home today.
See you next year, PP!!!!!

Where is Taco Brissas. Love La Cita. Glad to hear about Azul. They were reopening the day after I left. After a quick run to Oregon we will go back for Doggie Dental. Will eat at Azul the next trip since that is the pool I use. I love all of the suggestions on this site. I have been sent to more good places to eat that I never would have known about

I use the tip calculator on my phone. but will tip according to the service, but I'm kind of ruff looking not starchy, lol, If you don't mind me asking where did you stay? BTW nice review but I always get fresh sea food at aqui con flavio, maybe cause they know me....

Just heard Azul is going to have another special this weekend. Do not know the details yet.

Not from what I've seen, Melissa. The guys seem to love working there. Luca is a sweetheart and the waiters, especially Miguel and Victor are always in a good mood. Luca's fiancé Karina is wonderful. I wouldn't believe a word of that rumor. I've seen Luca under stress and yet always willing to lend a hand. Of course working with chefs for the Taste of Peñasco, I learned early on that almost all of them have a bit of temperament...like many creative types. Luca is one of my favorites. Let me know when you're here and want to go!

Flavios lacks flavor and freshness usually. Last trip down we hit the malecon and my dad got suckered into the first place he walked by which we knew wasn't going to be anything special but we just wanted cold drinks. They brought us out a free serving a clams (not sure why) but they looked questionable at best. Ate some just to be polite and had fish tacos and that was enough to know i don't need to go back anytime soon. Wife had a cheese quesadilla that any kid would love.

Recent Experiences:

Mexico Beach Bum -( On the Malecon, second level, old La Palapa location) Stopped with the thought of eating about 6:30 or so. Really nice building, ocean views with deck outside. Place was empty of customers and feels cold and sterile inside (needs tablecloths.) Waitress, nice friendly young lady with good english was fun to chat with. She told us that there are recently new owners from Scotsdale AZ I think. Staff member was cleaning tables by going from one to the other with a spray bottle of Fabulosa and a rag. No water and no rinsing. The odor of Fabulosa and food do not go well together for me. We left and I noticed the smears on the tables he had 'cleaned'. Again, poorly trained staff and absentee owners do not go well together. Overall a 4 (although I confess I have never eaten here, the joint is just not inviting to me) as a restaurant and a 9 as a bar with a view. Fabulosa spraying a -5

La Fondita --(On Fremont, next to the the Black Dog Casino,) Food very tasty, friendly and efficient staff, place very clean. Dine in or out. Very Mexican menue. Had fajitas give them a 9. Friend had a burrito he loved it. The atmosphere is a bit cold and sterile feeling. Was a guy with insect spray in a squirt bottle going around the dining room shooting spray randomly on some tables, the windows and some plants. No bueno. Food rates a 9, atmosphere a 7 and insect spray a -4

Carribien Bay -- (On Fremont in the Mirador, towards the beach from Capones) Place used to be down on the Malecon second level nearby the Oxxo. Owner came over to chat us up and said the menue was the same as the other joint. Menue is extensive but nothing really different from the standard Penasco fare of variations on shrimp and fish stuff. Offers a variety of sandwiches and the pizza has been reported to be good. Staff was efficient and attentive. Had some special requests and they werr happy to comply. Had fajitas and I'll give them a 8.5. The place is huge inside with very very high ceilings, large central bar, second level balcony around half the building and a large stage on one end. Few windows so there is little natural light inside. It has a 'cave feeling' due to the high ceilings but he is working on the decorations. Owners says he is considering having shows there. Dine in or out as you please. No one with a spray bottle here. Atmosphere an 8 due the cave feeling, food an 8.5.

Latitude -- ( Up on the side of Whale Hill, on the left side of Benito Juarez on the way to the Maleon. Look up or you might miss it !) Have been frequenting this joint quite a bit. Nice atmosphere. Owner, Mike is almost always there and willing to make you what you want to eat. Mexican food is real tasty. Service is always good, nice friendly and helpful staff. Excellent family friendly atmosphere, good with kids. Internet and free phone to the US. Beer on tap and always has wine. Large palapa overlooking the boats, dine in or out. Heavy sports bar, LOTS of big screens but not intrusive as some others. Atmosphere a 8.5, food the same.

Bryans , (on Fremont close to the Las Conchas entrance) -- Another hang out for me. Packed for big sporting events and on Friday night for the Prime Rib Special (get there early to order if you have your heart set on it, served at 7 or so ) . Beer on tap but runs out of wine a lot! Pizza here rates a 9 in my book. Burgers are also a 9. A few Mexican offerings with good fajitas. Chicken Wings special on Wed. night can draw a large crowd but generally later. Pasta specials on Thursday are pretty good too, when they don't run out! Sports bar atmosphere but no too intrusive. Adjacent dirt street is access to the new sand drag strip and gets hairy on drag nights. Atmosphere a 7 (Sports bar) food average 8.

Man ate at Mar Blu Saturday night, was not impressed at all had crab raviolis and they were bland. Girlfriend had fettuccine and it was mediocre at best. Mushroom soup was great. Bill was $81 bucks tipped $15 bucks in cash and they charge the credit card $87. Ratf$%ked me for a $21 dollar tip

Don Julios -- On Fremont, the old Las Fuentes restaurant. Have not been back for some time. Friend and I ate there and they served him a glass of water that smelled like a dirty wet dog. Absolutely disgusting. Called the waiter and he shouted at the bartender. Staff gathered around the big screen TV in the bar chatting. Food was mediocre. I won't go back. I think it is the same owner as Mar Blu ? Anyone know for sure?

Took my brothers son over to BooBar for his birthday for lunch. He ordered the double cheesburger BooBar burger and holy crap is was huge. This kid can eat and he left a whole patty. Got me some hotwings and they were hot, huge plus. Place was packed but we still got good service. Always liked that place.

Probably the best burger in town is at BooBar.

That's what I think. The sliders are the best!
TICO-T
Don Julio owns the Mare Blu in Old Port, and Sandy Beach + Don Julio's on Fremont. I had the fish soup twice this weekend and fantastic. The purified water with a lime was fine. Tecate Light was better!
MIRAMAR
Ate at a few places right on the Malecon for fish tacos, and they don't stack up w/ Blue Marlin's grilled shrimp tacos w/ Pico de Gallo, Red Onions, and Cilantro cream sauce- yum. Agree w/ review on Bryan's and the Prime Rib- great deal for $10. Tacos Poblanos are the best I've found for Carne Asada in Penasco.

Tico, last month I was at Don Julio's with Ross. That is our family traditional last night treat. Love the Shrimp Mary (Surprise)

Ross ordered a Sol and I had a Tecate Light. After a bit, I happened to notice that the Tecate bottle was quite a bit smaller than
the Sol. Upon further review it appeared that the Tecate had about 30 +/- ML less than the Sol. When I pointed that out to our
favorite server, without a second's hesitation, he said, "Ah Senor, thats why they call it Tecate Light." We laughed our a$$es off.

Obviuously, my choice for the rest of the night was Sol. Still love the place.

Hello Mis2810,

I have nothing agaist mexican people, actually I am very happy with both of my teams (at Pane e Vino and Azul Bar) they are awesome, it would be impossible to get a lot of very good reviews or comments about the food and the service in both locations, if they were not happy working there.
Best regards,

Hello Chef Luca, I'm not going to give you the names of the people who told me that because it would be in very poor taste to do so. I have always wanted to try Pane e Vino, because of all the fantastic reviews and because I am of Italian descent. I will admit that being told that made me hesitant to try your restaurant, but I assure you, that one of these days I will stop by and have dinner. When I do I will introduce myself to you. Thank you.

Chef Luca.. I have been to Pane y Vino a number of times and have always found it to be enjoyable. The service is excellent and that would not be the case
if they were mistreated. I was there one night and there was a horse grazing in the field next door. I ordered one of your fine Filets and when it was served
I noticed the horse was gone. I pointed it out to the servers and we all had a great laugh. I believe that was the night I couldn't decide on the Pepper Sauce
or the Gorgonzola so you gave me both on the side. I loved both and still don't know which one I prefer.

Keep up the good work. Hope to see you soon.

You are welcome to come to Pane e Vino or Azul Bar any day you want. Have a good day!

If Luca is treating his employees badly then they are some great actors. Everytime we go in everybody is in a great mood the food is always top shelf. One of these days I will get my stuff together so I can pre-order the Osso Bucco again that was awesome. And Gv Jack go for the Gorgonzola that is some great eats. and you can never leave Pan e Vino with out a big tall Tiramisu...

Hey, Melissa...I'm looking forward to us going and introducing you to my dear friend, Luca, as well as his employees, Eduardo, Miguel and Victor. All three were upset when they saw this and right away, they came to his defense. Miguel said he's known Luca since long before he worked for him and considers him a fine person. One of the best things about Pane e Vino is that they make me feel that cooking for me...and waiting on me...is a labor of love. I often go in alone after work because once there...I'm never alone.

Now Melissa and her husband will come in to see what the fuss is all about, they'll love it will post on here about their experience and they'll bring others. Last week I had visiting VIPs from Chihuahua and they got the royal treatment from your staff. It was wonderful! And both desserts topped the evening off perfectly. Gracias!

Mi amigo Luca: Don't even concern yourself with who said it. Take it from me...every time some anonymous person comes in here to post that they didn't like ProAlliance Insurance, we get a boost in business. Whoever it was did you a favor. Anyone who gets to know you will see the big, sensitive teddy bear you really are. Besides, if you were a mean guy you wouldn't have attracted such a doll as Karina, right?

We love Pane e Vino. We go there at least once every time we are in RP. The waiters are always smiling and friendly. . They seem like they remember us. Don't know if they really do but makes us feel welcomed. Chef Luca almost always comes out to greet and be sure we are satisfied. The food is great. The place is beautifully decorated. The music is pleasing. We love it.

Long time visitors of PP and Love It! We usually bring most of our food, not because we do not want to eat out, but because we usually stay out at Playa Mirimar and travel with my big doggie! That being said, we have been to several restaurants over the years. Hubby love seafood, I do not (I know, but to quote Paula Deen - I is what I is :har:!).

Last time we were there he enjoyed the fish fry at Ramones @ Sonoran Sea. Not sure if that is still the same as things change so often, but it was very nice.

We have had dinner at The Pointe in Old Port and of course El Capitan - OK food, grande margaritas, fantastic views!

We have also been to Mar Blue on Sandy Beach and thought their food was very good (Yes, a little pricy). One time after a day of hunting for treasures from the sea at Cholla Bay, we were exhausted and hungry and wanted to eat out. Because the weather was beautiful we decided to leave big doggie in the back of the truck (with windows open of course). The staff saw us put her back there and told us because it was not very busy we were welcome to bring her out on the patio!! It was awesome. They allowed me to bring her water bowl and rug out, I put her leash onto the leg of my chair (not that she was going anywhere), and we had a lovely meal and cocktails, watched the sunset, and did not have to hurry back to the truck to take care of her. They even brought her a little treat!

This is one of the many things we love about PP and why are counting the days until our next adventure

Every time I go stay at my place in Bella, I end up going to Azul. They have a great menu and the prices are good. I really would like to see something happen that would encourage all my renters to go there. Do the have any Happy Hour Specials or anything?

'They normally have a happy hour and sometimes specials - they post them on the blackboard at the Azul Bar. I think they are planning on something for the 4th of July. I'll check with Karina. Quite often now they have a live band playing on the weekends - they are very good. I've suggested that they put their specials on the Bella TV channel but I don't believe they have done so.

Hi Luca,

I feel I need to throw my hat into this ring about comments being said about you, since I own a couple of business's and am very much in the public eye in my community, I have read all kinds of CRAZY things written about me that were all lies. Keep your chin up, continue to provide a service you are proud of and I hope most people have enough brains to think for themselves. My husband and I will put you on the top of our list when we come down to PP. We LOVE good food, and great service will keep us coming back. When I hear a negative review it makes me want to try a place because from my experience people get back what they put out. That being said we look forward to trying your establishment out!

Cheers!

Over 20 years I have yet to find another restaurant in Rocky Point where the food is good, the margaritas fresh and outstanding, and the view to die for. There are many places with good eats, but to me, nothing comes close to the total Casa Del Capitan experience.
El Gato
We had dinner at Pane e Vino last Saturday and, as always, it was excellent. As mentioned, the staff are always friendly and upbeat and they obviously enjoy working there. The place was full but there was no pressure at all to hurry up and free up your table. We ended up talking to people at some of the tables around us - comparing what we had to what they had - and everyone commented that their dish was 'the best'.

Luca and Karina were at a wedding but apparently called in and when they heard we were there they had our waiter give us their best. Talk about feeling at home :)
MIRAMAR
But to me, nothing comes close to the total Casa Del Capitan experience.

I used to love Nachos at Casa del Capitan until they started adding sugar to the beef served on top. I really wish they would take out the sugar and return to the original recipe because that is a fantastic view.

Oh well.

Mr Flores' gas station in Why has, hands down, the best burritos on the road from Phoenix to Penasco. It is very hard for us to pass without stopping for one red chili and one bean and cheese.

Over 20 years I have yet to find another restaurant in Rocky Point where the food is good, the margaritas fresh and outstanding, and the view to die for. There are many places with good eats, but to me, nothing comes close to the total Casa Del Capitan experience.

Great discount coupon available for La Casa Del Capitan. We had a group of 6 and saved some serious cash!

We have used that coupon at least 10 times this year and you are correct, a big savings!

Smart move on the part of the owners. We have seen a real uptick in business since they started that promotion back in December.

We do seem to find ourselves there at least once every time we visit. I personally cannot decide which is better, the margaritas or the view!
Put them together - Awesome! :pinkie:

Ate at Mare Blu last week. A group of 10 of showed up and not very busy, maybe 4 other tables. It took over 45 min. for us to get our salads after we ordered and more than 30 min. after that to get our food which was not as good as we had in the past. Another table was complaining about the wait when I asked if there was a problem they kept saying the food was coming. A couple that we brought was so frustrated they gave me some money and left. We all went to Pano Vino another night and as always great service and great food, what a difference.

I have experienced terrible service at Mar Blu in the Malecon such that I will never go back. On the contrary, I have always had great service at Mar Blu on Sandy Beach. Hard to imagine the owner is not aware of the problems.
Luna
We have only been at the Mar Blue on Sandy Beach. I agree they are a little pricy in comparison; however, we have always had an excellent experience. Perhaps we have just been lucky, but the same can be said for establishments anywhere - one person has a different experience than another.

Defrente reports to Tourist restaurants on Sandy Beach have been closed down for Heath reasons...they do not say which. also poaching is really getting the shrimp catch..."The shrimp poaching closed season is the main reason for sampling by the National Fisheries Institute (Inapesca) produce results little flattering for the next harvest shrimp to start in September, declared Hermenegildo Ramirez. Two restaurants were shut down out of 28 that were inspected, they might of not been in the Sandy Beach area because the tourist zone extends from the Mirador all the way to JJ's.

Glad I don't eat shrimp!

I know that Chill Out Bar on Fremont is closed for 2 weeks, but not sure if that's the reason why or not.

We moved here June 2012 and have a few secrets we have shared with our friends.

Taco Poblanos-- Simply said, the best carne asada tacos I've EVER experienced. The pastors are ok, but the carnes asada is off the charts.

Mariscos Express-- Just down the street between Rosies and Poblanos. Awesome. Always fresh, always clean and an incredible value. The best seafood in Rocky Point. Go the Malecon for the atmosphere, cold beer at Boo Bar but get your seafood fix at Mariscos Express.

Fruit and Veggies-- Bypass the middle man and go right to the supplier. Coliman's sells to Super Ley but you are more than welcome to buy direct. We go in once a week and come out with two or three bags of the good stuff and have a hard time spending more than $15. If it's in season, they have it and always the best and freshest in town.

Classic Rock-- http://gopenasco.com I had to do it.

I agree Tacos Poblanos are the best in Penasco- a little picante, but delicious! We tried everyone's suggestions, but Tacos Poblanos are the best we've tried. I used to eat them with flour tortillas, but I tried the fresh corn tortillas after I saw the woman making them fresh from the masa, pressing them, and grilling right there. The best Carne Asada tacos we've found are in Sonoyta at El Serape.

Agree with you about El Serape. Their food is great! Have you tried their beans? Served in a cup almost like a soup with carne asada and melted cheese. Makes me hungry thinking about it!

With 550 taco stands around Penasco, Poblano are the best, Ha, I go for the shrimp tacos across from the little beer store on a side street in the malecon. JmHo.

Tacos Poblanos are good, but the carne asada and fish tacos at Viva Mexico on the malecon are better and cheaper - and they let you bring your own beer.
Estero
Agreed on Poblanos, and I bring my own beer there. There is another Poblanos on Simon Morua and Sinaloa that is not associated with the main Poblanos in the thread that is just so so.

The Tacos Poblanos we went to is on the south side of Simon Morua (the road with Ace Hardware) east of Sinaloa

Taco Poblanos-- across street from baseball stadium and school.

Colimans-- Melcher Ocampo across street from Castle Party Place

I thought the Tacos Poblanos on Morua tasted better- maybe it was the freshly made tortillas.
