Way off the the East past bird island on the mountain range we have seen in the last week huge amounts of smoke in the sky. One day it's there the next it's gone. It was in 3 different areas. Anyone know what it is from?
Jim Bob
that is not smoke those are mirages its an illusion thats why they are there one day and gone the next and you will see them in different spots
Terry C
You can see the smoke rising up and blowing away it looks like to me
Jim Bob
illusion nothing to burn out there
Southbeacher
We've seen that from time to time for years. They periodically do a controlled burning of the fields down "that way" as part of an agricultural process.
Jim Bob
if you get in a boat and head directly at them as you get closer to the island they will disapear right before your eys my brother Bob and i did it three times
Roberto
They do burn off the asparagus fields which are between Penasco and Caborca. Might be what you see.
Terry C
Thanks, you could see the smoke lay in the air today with the wind direction taking it North. Last time the wind took it South.
Kenny
Yep no question about it; coming in from that angle the Asparagus fields would be behind or to either side of the Island.

from the picture i now think we are seeing two different things what we call mirages are always to the right of the island or in front and are always white not like a burning field that picture is as one poster said is on the way to caborka
dirtsurfer
There at one time was a diesel fueled power plant in Puerto Libertad that would put out some heavy smoke.

Well there not all that big and depending on different factor's the smoke can be either black or more often lighter.

They burn a lot of field crops in Mexico and the states, in fact there are more than a few people on the States side that complain every year about the acrid smoke that blows over the border and into their towns. They worry about the pesticides that could be in it just for starters.

No question that the the mirages happen, and they are spectacular and ofter eerie... At times it looks like another Island is there, but upside down and on top of it. LOL Or maybe a boat.

Still there...second dirtiest power plant in Mexico. The new gas line route via Sasabe may save many lives down there if it gets hooked up ....of course the real purpose is for tankers to hook up to US oil and NG (we will be the new Saudi Arabia 2030) off the coast. Geologist down there told a friend the Canadian pipeline was really stopped because our companies didn't want the competition to slow the investment in US fields the new methods will bring on line.We are going to be flush if smart enough to get our taxpayer piece of it

We saw those today too. There were three columns of white smoke rising from the direction of Bird Island when standing on the beach in Las Conchas. Its got all of us stumped. Unless we are seeing burns from the the San Felipe side of the Gulf...Its diffently not in the direction of Carborca.

We might not be talking about the same columns of smoke. The ones we saw were diffidently out on the water...possibly on the other side of the Gulf

When you look at Bird Island from where you're at, Santo Tomas is off to the right, and behind of Bird Island. Google Earth, then maybe you can see how when you look off to the right of the Island, you'll be looking right down the coast line.

You've got me stumped! If you're standing on the beach in Las Conchas looking towards Bird Island you are looking South East and San Felipe is the opposite direction in Baja California...

It is a mirage.

A pigment of your imagination.:notme:
Kenny
Joe, you did see that picture of the smoke that Jerry posted didn't you? From Los Conchas that would be to the right of the Island, and could very well look like it's out over the water from there.

I confirmed with a local that they have been burning the asparagus fields out that way.
Encanto
image.jpgTook this pic from Encanto with my phone. San Jorge is kind of visible to the right of the smoke.
Terry C
That is the same place we have seen them on and off for a week now. 2-3 different places. It is not a mirage.

Yep. Just to expound on my earlier comment -- For many years we've been on the patio from time to time observing changes at various points on the horizon. Among our fascinating  conversation: "Well they're burning the fields out east again." Or "There's that mirage out east again." They both occur. They both can look like smoke, although the mirage more often looks like land or a mountain range. Difference: The smoke moves.

Or the smoke moves while the mirages just go up in smoke..
