Well I did it and bought a new jet ski to turn into a fishing ski.
I bought a 3 person 4 stroke Kawasaki STX-15F and can add all the stuff I need to go out 20 or 30 miles to fish with the big boys. They tell me if I hold the speed to about 30 mph it should have a trip limit of over 100 miles. I plan to cary a spare fuel tank to be sure. I can add a rack on the stern to hold a fuel tank, a cooler, a small bait tank and have 4 pole holders. I am like a little kid in a candy store waiting for Fall. I figure I will stay busy building and re building this summer until I get it the way I want it. Then to the lake to test it out before heading down. I plan on building with PVC to get it the way I want it and then to al.
As I have aged I have said i don't care if I die on the ocean.
The Jet ski thing is growing all over the world. Seems Australia is kind of in the lead but it is becomming common in Southern California also. The stability is out of site and if they do rollthey are simple to right. All of the openings are water tight so they do not take on water and what little does seep in is handled by the bilge pump.
I am sure I will not ge going out 20 miles for a year or 2. Lots of reefs closer in than that.
Bill...good choice with the 15F (I don't recall of that one is supercharged/turbo)...although I am a SeaDoo person! And don't worry about going out 20-30 miles. I've gone out to Bird Island on ours...and my daughter was around 15 and had a friend along on her SeaDoo. We've also gone out to Catalina Island from Long Beach. Both are about 30 miles each way.
Just make sure you have someone who knows where you're heading, have a good gps and radio with you. You are a very small "target" out there if someone is trying to locate you.
You can even rig a depth finder/fishfinder if you really want one. The transducer can be epoxied inside the hull. SeadDoo even started offering that as an option.
A piece of advice...take good care of the battery...keep it on a trickle charger, and make sure the one you have is not under capacity. With the fuel injection, it puts a heavy load on the electrical system, and the alternators are not that great in terms of being able to charge a low battery and running the ski at the same time. If you're making a lot starts while fishing, it can drain the battery very quickly.
The next time we're both down in Penasco, let's get together....I'd be glad to give you some tips on improvements you can make. And find yourself a good motocross type helmet. You'd be surprised on how rough it can get out there very quickly, and it has saved me from several broken noses or missing teeth (from face plants into the handle bars!!).

I had not even thought of the helmet and the face in the handlebars. When I do my wood turning I wear a catchers face plate and it is not as large and would be cool in the heat.

Bill...no fishing...I eat them but don't catch them LOL....but I do have a frame that mounts on the rear that holds a smaller cooler...probably 20 qts.....I'll dig up the name of the company that sells it, and try to get a pic for you. It would be perfect to mount rod holders to, etc.
On the helmet, I don't wear it unless it's really rough, or I'm out doing some wave jumping....yep, with a 3 seater!!!!

Dawg....the xp is a fun jetski....very popular on the racing circuit back in the carburetor days, but not very stable as a fishing platform...and barely a 2 seater! I've seen people continually roll it trying to get back on after they fall off!

Either that or a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon)...PLB 15 miles or 30....what's the difference? In rough water, with the size of the jetski, you wouldn't see him until you were right on top of him...like you on your yak!

Don't criticize someone's choice unless you have some experience! I've been out on mine when the port was closed (red flag....at the time I didn't know what the red flag meant).....

I would say definitively that yes there is a fuel dock in San Felipe! The YODERFLOAT guy with the sailboat was going to go there but before hand nixed it out and went straight to Penasco instead. Im assuming that if he was planning on docking at their marina then odds are yes they have a refuel dock.

Mex Joe....I had intended on making the trip to San Felipe a few years ago...just concerned about the availability of fuel right in the harbor. My jetski (3 seater SeaDoo GTX-SC) carries 15.9 gal. of gas....and I can easily do 80-90 miles with a reserve if I don't push it...somewhere around 30-35mph. I can easily strap on another 5 gal. of fuel. I've ridden out to Catalina Island from Long Beach....and that is open ocean.....about 30 mi.....took about an hour......the most dangerous part was avoiding the high speed ferry that was heading out!!! I've run in a couple 300 mile team endurance races at Havasu (held yearly in Feb).....and if you've been out there after the crazies come out with their big boats, and the ferry starts crossing to the res for gambling....the water there gets pretty brutal......
So...I'm getting a hip replacement in a couple months...if the doc gives me the ok...I will be back riding.....maybe I'll make the ride over...maybe I won't.
Before you yell more BS....these 2 pics are from the last 300 mile race I ran...the first pic(in the full wetsuit) was my teammate, Eric....I'm in the shorty wetsuit. A couple of years of temporary insanity racing at age 55!!!! That was a Seadoo RXP....2 seater, somewhere around 900 lb., 1500 cc 4 stroke, supercharged/intercooled...3 cylinder Rotax putting out 215 hp.....running between 65-70 mph (gps'd)...... I don't have that one anymore.
Bill...the first pic is the foot well on my ski...that black strip on the side is hard rubber that has adhesive backing, and then was siliconed all around to keep the water off the adhesive. It's used by racers as a foot hold...you just slip your feet (both sides) under to keep from going off the ski in rough water. It's about 2 ft. long, an inch thick and about 2 inches wide. Definitely helps! The last 2 are the frame and cooler I have...unfortunately, I couldn't locate the manufacturer....looks like he closed up shop!

Have you ever ridden a 3 seater jetski? I've asked that question a couple of times already......
First, everything is pretty much sealed up....the hatches have seals.....and any water that MAY splash in (a little under the seat where intake air is coming in) is taken care of by the bilge pump. It takes some huge waves breaking over the bow to get water inside the hull. Those "lake" boats have very little freeboard...have open bows....can be easily swamped.....and they will not roll back if flipped.
The next time you're watching a surfing competition...check out what they're using for rescue out there in those waves. Also do a search for tow surfing....these "unsafe" jetskis are used for the "tow" out there....in some of the biggest waves around.....
And please don't bring politics or logic into the discussion....we'll have Jerry adding his 2 cents! :rofl:
Yes I have ridden many 3 seater jetskis, numerous times, on rivers, lakes and once on Pleasant. And on pleasant the ski was nothing more than a bitch to ride because of the choppy water. Hopefully Jerry's logic makes more sense than riding a jetski 15 miles out into the ocean lol but not a boat. If you can't afford it charter a boat when you're there, it's better than being dead
Joe, you seem to know more about Doo's than most and you must have plenty of experience, unlike Bill that has none, I would not venture out alone that's why most people pair them up, right. i'm not against Bill trying to fish from his, I've owned mine since they were new, many moon's ago and never been abused. Then you have someone that does not say they know the history of the ski. I'm just trying to prevent a tragedy.
Hooch and Playa...I would never recommend for Bill to go out 15-20 miles ALONE.....particularly since he has no experience riding a jetski. He should always leave a float plan with someone (His wife?) anyway. I did recommend that once he gets the jetski rigged like he wants, that he get one for her too! I know she likes to fish also. When my daughter and I rode out to Bird Island, I had friends staying at Playa Bonita who knew where we were going, and when to expect us back. They also had one of my vhf radios set to the channel I would use if necessary (5watt...not sure if it would have reached). I used to come down occasionally and ride solo, sometimes practicing for a race, when my daughter was not coming down with me. I don't do that anymore......as I get older (maybe wiser???). I've had a local friend ride the other ski if I didn't have someone coming down, and would do so again. Plus as the skis get older, more risk of breaking down. Just like scuba and never diving solo....for anything more than coastal riding....buddy up!
Playa, if you have xp's, those are great skis, but not ones I would venture out as far as I would with the 3 seaters (NOT a knock on the ski!!). They are not as stable...and definitely take considerably more experience to handle.
The point I was trying to make...maybe unsuccessfully.....maybe because I was being somewhat defensive on them being pooh-poohed.... is that the newer 3 seater jetskis are very capable machines....if they are well maintained, you have some (enough) experience with them, and you are prepared for the trip....to the point that riding out in open water does not need to be avoided or feared. There are groups that ride from Florida to the Bahamas regularly. Again...they go prepared! I've been in water out there (Penasco)that would have swamped an open bow "lake type" boat. All bets are off if the ski is a rental unit. I had one bad experience the first time I rented one at Lake Pleasant, and was lucky enough to have a boater tow me in.
I haven't ridden Pleasant for a few years now....if you don't go out on a weekday, there are just too many crazies out there on a weekend. The chop gets horrendous from the big powerboats running up and down the lake (just like Havasu).....forget it by around 10am on a weekend! Riding the ocean is completely different....you can "read" the wave action, even if it's rough, whereas on the lake, it's just madness with the chop.

One thing to think about Bill- you were mentioning making a PVC rack for your ski... even though aluminum is way more expensive to fabricate, you might re-consider it for two reasons:
1) Eventually, the Sun exposure will turn PVC pretty brittle- the vibrations on the water will add add stress that will probably ultimately lead to cracking and failure, although this is offset by the fact that PVC is pretty cheap, so you can just make a new one when it starts breaking down.
I know Don used PVC to frame out his inflatable boat- maybe check in with him on how well it has held up over time.
2) PVC is actually quite a bit heavier than aluminum...weight savings means increased fuel economy...

Probably a little bit, especially if it fills with water. I would look into sealing off the ends. On a Hobie Cat, the mast head is sealed with silicone, and you can right one if you tip. Once the seal (silicone) breaks down, and you tip, and start filling the mast with water...fogettaboutit!!! As Robert indicated, the aluminum should be relatively light. The key to a rollover is to right as quickly as possible if the jetski hasn't self-righted.
