I personally saw it in action this afternoon, in the bar at the east end. It is disgusting. However, for a culture that still gets joyfully excited watching bullfights and lops heads off humans on a regular basis, it's not surprising. The next thing we will learn is they are into cannibalism. Is there such a thing as a 4th world country?
No im not involved in that part of the business. But if you really hate it, there is a way to stop it!
Support Manny's Beach Club by having breakfast, lunch or dinner there. The more you spend at Manny's the less they have to depend on people renting the place for cockfights.
I realize it may be ok in Mexico...but cock fighting and dog fighting are sick! That's "sport"?????
When and where did you witness these dog fights in Penasco? I know you get pissed off when you see our taxi drivers parading the hoe's on calle trece, hey you don't like it you don't have to come here...

Hey dawg....sober up before you go posting...and read the previous posts to get the context of the thread....that way you won't come across as if you can't read....OK?
Hey dawg... I never said there was dog fighting in Rocky Point (although I wouldn't doubt it)....I was just commenting on both cock and dog fighting as a "sport"!
Unlike you I don't drink or do drugs!! Where does it say they fight dogs?
Oh that's right....you spend all your money on the "ladies" at Guau Guau's or Mamacitas....or do you hang out at that tranny place on Calle 13?:stir::moon::har:

Listen up bar fly that's in love with the male bartender at the boo bar...we all knows your a gay rooster....
Manny, does it mean you finally sold Manny's and "they" the new owners have the rights to use "their" place and your name as they see fit? Do not get it. Please explain.
Are you saying that your personal code of ethics do not come into play as long as $$$'s are involved?[/QUOTE
stop trying to be a <WASH MY MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP><WASH MY MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP><WASH MY MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP><WASH MY MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP> disturber, that is not what he said, "Read, before you write"
Sorry Dee Dee, but there really was a small dog living on top of Manny's bar. It would walk to the edge and bark for scraps from eating customers. I am not making this up. I am sure others here on this site saw the dog up there at some point.

So you came to the conclusion that the dog was trapped up there, with no way to get down and that was Manny's fault?
Manny Jr. stopped by my office today and we briefly discussed this thread. We both ended up just shaking our heads. He doesn't have anything to do with what goes on at his Dad's place. And, although cock fighting is taboo in the USA, it has a very long tradition here in Mexico. If you don't like it, don't watch it but this is a different country with a different culture. We are guests here and shouldn't try to force our values or opinions on anyone here. And, trying to hurt the reputation of Manny's Beach Club for trying to survive in this difficult economy by catering to what the local people want is just wrong. Like Manny says, If you don't like it, go spend some money there so they don't have to rent the place out.
If you don't like it, go spend some money there so they don't have to rent the place out.
This isn't a comment made by a judgment call on Cockfighting, but on how some people feel about it. The way things work in reality is that if they don't like it, they'll stay away and spend their money else where. It's absurd to think they'll (people who thinks it's barbaric, and inhumane) patronize a place that has Cockfighting, in hopes that will help make it go away.

This comment coming from a visitor that has not spent 20 dollars at manny's beach club ever!
We have a long tradition of Cock fighting in the states(200 years at least) too but bit by bit have driven it underground by making it illegal and more importantly uncool. The same thing will happen in Mexico. The low budget winter visitors are the key to getting Mannys going again like it's 1997.Making it hard to cross the border in the old Airstream with a few toys and some dog treats doesn't help Mannys bottom line.A 3 dollar breakfast special and a buck a beer card (one per night) might get the geezers in the door
If they had strippers in the back room it'd be the same thing, I wouldn't expect families to flock to a business to make the un-family element go away. That's some twisted logic right there. Now, if they completely close the place down and rent it out, then that's their business what goes on, but if it's happening while other customers are there, and these fights are within earshot...
Well, let's just say I haven't said a word to anyone I know that goes down to Penasco about this thread, in hopes that it goes away and I can continue taking them to Manny's without getting into a ethical standoff over boycotting the place. I have several friends that are animal-rights activists, and different country or not, this is Manny's BEACH CLUB. If I was hitting up a bar in town that is a known local watering hole for Mexican nationals, I'd expect a bit of the old world element, but not at one of the most iconic tourist destinations for as long as Americans have been going down to Penasco.
Do what you have to do, and it may help you in the short run, but I wouldn't be running the restaraunt/bar at the same time as these events, because you can kiss goodbye any longtime customer that sees (or even hears rumors) about this kind of stuff going on.
Looks like Grigozona has the same thought junior, and has expounded on it... Please, just try to answe one question while keeping a civil tongue in your mouth. Was that "dog" on the roof you?
I was wrong about not spending any money at Manny's. I'd patronized Manny's back in the day, and probably helped expand the place with my "donations".

Looks like your computer program can't spell james's name. I like james info on here, his post are very helpful with ?'s are always good, but like jim said it's culture.
I thought my statement at the beginning of saying what I though about this deal
"This isn't a comment made by a judgment call on Cockfighting, but on how some people feel about it"
made it clear that I was talking about how this would effect business, and to expect people to patronize the place to help stop Cockfighting was not a viable idea.
Jim who I consider a friend of mine has always conducted himself in a adult manner (sometimes I miss Javelina) and above board on this forum, and more than once in private conversations I've expressed that thought to him. I don't believe he thought, and I certainly wasn't, attacking him or his thoughts about Cockfighting, though I personally I find it a barbaric "sport", and in the same boat as dog fighting.
I didn't say that I approved of it. I just wanted to make a comment about my conversation with Manny Jr. today. And, I am more than a little bothered about people in general telling Mexicans how they should live in their own Country. (Not specifically referring to cock fighting). Thanks for the positive reinforcement Kenny.
I don't think cockfighting will go away anytime soon in Mexico. It is their culture. As mentioned above, it is not fair to come into their country and ask them how to run it. It also wouldn't be fair to bring their "sport" into the USA, but that's another thread.
I do, however, don't like the manipulative response from Manny's. "Go spend money, or we'll continue to do this."
I agree with, "if you don't like it, go elsewhere", but the "or else" comment felt wrong. As if blaming the customer for what is going on.
This is from a point of view of someone not familiar with Manny's or any of you. So I'm not taking "sides", just commenting on the negative feel of Manny's post.

A little off topic....although I agree with the comment, that hasn't stopped Mexico (and it's representatives) from coming into our country (and Arizona) and trying to tell us how to run it!:stir::stir::stir:
The law in many countries allows for the abuse of children, women, ethnic groups and many other helpless (from physical abuse to sexual abuse to killing). I guess we should all just turn away and focus only on the problems within our country, right? I guess abuse of such ones is someone else's problem. If tourists would just buy the breakfast burrito or taco plate such activities would go away.
I think it is common to have dogs on a roof in Mexico. I saw it frequently in Guadalajara when I went to the town of Tequila. I remember being caught off guard walking down the street at night and all of a sudden a dog barking down on me.
R E S P E C T, is all you want for yourself, why would you have to forget about giving it to others specially when you are in their country and if you spend more than 35% of your time in their country you better start A D A P T I N G, because in life there are only TWO thing that are sure for anybody and every being in this universe CHANGE and DEATH!!
I believe my dad has already a ring for boxing and a place for mud wrestling, it has have been active for a few weeks now.
Also that ugly fence is no longer there.
I will pass on your comments to my dad.
And to all the forum, I invite you to swing by the Tequila Factory for a tequila shot. I think I need one :)
Wahoo Sez: "I still come by every time, but since it is usually on weekdays during the day, usually it is just an empty hall and I just shake my head in sadness of what you have done to that place...."
That's a pretty much uncalled for inaccurate statement. It's an empty hall because there are very few customers, everywhere. Changes they have made in operation reflect that not the obverse.
Wahoo SEZ: What struck as un acceptable was Manny's comment of "if you do not like it spend some money at my place so I do not have to look for other ways to make some money".....
Perhaps an unfortunate choice of words, but I think your interpretation does not reflect the intent of his statement. My take was that he was saying their typical clientel were not coming there and they were making choices to keep the business alive . Mannys is not the only place that has had to make adjustments to survive.
Wahoo Sez: Just like Rockypoint it has a personality problem, is it Mexican or a Arizona's beach town Is Manny's for Americans pricing all in Dollars or do you cater to locals and use Mexican pesos? You can not do both well....
How is that a personality problem. One would think that Americans come to Mexico to enjoy the culture and differences from home, not change things here to suit US tastes. You are obviously out of touch with business in Perto Penasco Mexico. It is becoming more and more a Mexican vacation destination and those business that provide what the Mexican culture seeks will do OK. It also sounds like you are saying you don' t want to shop at places that price in Pesos or that maybe you'd prefer the Mexicans not come here.
You have made it clear what you think of cock fighting, why not keep your comments to that subject. It's a very emotional issue for some and it seems to me that it has colored your thinking about a broader subject.
Some of the best times I have ever had in Rocky Point occurred at Manny's back in the late 90's. I loved the inground beer gardens. I still love the Combo Plate and eat there everytime I come down. I may go for dinner this weekend.

Uhm... Manny do you have virgin tequila at the Tequila Factory for those of us that don't do alcohol..? If ya do I'm there man... I'll match shots for shots with anyone... 8^)
I know it doesn't mean much, but here's my opinion about Manny's in general (not about Manny or his son personally). I only started going to RP regularly in 2003, other than once in April of '97 - so by your standards, I'm obviously a newbie. But I remember hearing about Manny's and JJ's for years and how fun they were. The people I went down to RP with in June of 2003 took me to Manny's for dinner on a Saturday night. It was loaded with drunk 20-something, white, gang-banger wanna-bees and various other white trash of the toothless variety. Trust me, I'm not saying I'm the Queen of England, and I love me a good dive bar anytime, but this place was gross. Needless to say I never went back.
Lots of bars go in and out of style. Manny's probably needs a good facelift and a complete personality/PR makeover. Not enough gringos to keep it in business? Then revamp it for a place where the local "fresa" crowd can go on the weekends. No need to try to relive its past heyday. Nothing ever stays the same and you can't go back.
If I'm ever reincarnated as a domestic fowl and have a choice, I think I'll choose to be a fighting cock. It's a hard job, but consider the alternatives.
thanks wahoo, for Economics minus 100 ! I'm not sure about other folks, but i note you hope to prosper again. is prosper a verb, or an adjective for a medical condition?

I thought after thinking about it for one split second, and then remembering all your cheerful posts on here since May of last year, a trip down memory lane would be fun.
The long term solution in other countries that have this same pestilence is to set a trap for the sub- human varmints who have no respect for everything owned by another person. Ideally the trap would inflict some long term pain and he then crawled into public view and onto the front page of the local papers. These animals know most foreigners don't have their trusty .38's at hand, which only fuels their disrespect for everything they don't own.

There's been plenty more insights from 1996... There seems to be a tone to most of your post's, that makes folks just want to reach out to you....:moon:
I have to agree with mis2810. I stopped going to Manny's because of the wantabe gangster punks. Fifty year old men dirty dancing with 15 year old girls and the fights. I will go back now. Anything was an improvement over how it had gotten to be. Not to mention the swell chicken deals on Monday. Good planning for Monday nigh football.
Ms2810 i think I know who to turn to to save the wreck of the SS Manny. http://www.bbcamerica.com/kitchen-nightmares/ We write to gordon Ramsey and get the BBC to do a Kitchen Nightmares show down in Rocky Point.
Maybe turn to Architectural Students from the Uof A or a Sonoran University to work on a redesign as a class project if Gordon is busy.
My ideas :
go late 60's retro american vw surfervan meets retro Airstream look meets young vibrant mexico../open air sitting areas with rattan couches.firepits, sea food,,to stay or to go(like Ivars takeout in Pike Street market area) outdoor oven making personal pizzas,,,,,but seafood and breakfast are the key....tie in a deal with Canadian rvers to arrange places to stay with meals from mannys as part of the park package...hey Manny jr. seems way sharper than the average young wheeler-dealer (a complement) he could really get this thing cooking again...

unfortunately the destiny of Manny's as well as many other bar/restaurant business in the Avenida Matamoros was written when 3 or so of the RVers parks got closed thanks to mostly american greed and now they sit empty collecting garbage, I think that before we call it what USA people think they should call it, wait lets not forget our canadian buddies eh!! like 1996, we should leave the culture and society of Mexico out of our bitching since we are the ones visiting and we should embrace it for what it is and not for what some foreigners want it to be!!!
You should charge a commission to Manny for your ideas. Ideas like this are probably the only way to save this place. I don't remember any decor, so to speak, other than chain link fencing.

Time to let go and move on, our little fishing village with a drinking problem is in fact a little fishing village with a drinking problem again! Heard that the main event
for the next cockfight is a famous Rooster that goes by the name of HAPPY vs Rockyptjoe!
Beautiful and inspiring story. But it shouldn't have to end with cockfighting. Whomever is in charge of Manny's Beach Club today should find inspiration in Manny's original strength and determination to find a way to revive what was obviously once a warm and inviting place to eat, drink, and socialize. Cockfighting may be acceptable in Mexico, and yes, when we visit we are just that - visitors. But, my opinion (my opinion! - please respect my opinion as I would respect yours) is that having cockfighting just to make a few $$ is extremely short-sighted. Once the gringos get wind of this most of them will stay away. The ones who don't stay away are the kind that you wouldn't want as patrons anyway. A long term solution would be renovation and re-branding the Beach Club idea based on Manny's original dream and concept.

That would require the same economic conditions that applied at that time, Todays reality is that the americans are just not there spending money and the mexicans are. You sell the product that your customers want or you fail, simple as that. I am over simplifying a bit, but you get the point.

Who says it has to be for Americans only? There are a lot of locals that spend money. Just go to Elixir on a Saturday night and you'll be shoulder-to-shoulder at the bar trying to get a drink that isn't cheap by RP standards. They need to turn it into a place that has the "cabana" feel to it. Hire a decent DJ. The fresa crowd in Rocky Point would flock to a semi-upscale "Beach Club". That's what people want now and will pay for. Not hanging out with drunk, toothless gang-bangers from Chandler. Also, it doesn't have to have the 50+ gringo clientele either in order to be a success.
Man those baby boomer's knew how to enjoy life, now with most of them suffering insomnia, hypertension, vertigo, ed, for starters, those were great times for them.
anyway maybe the little click can keep this night club Elixir open one night a week, but try doing it everyday. I wish Manny the best and congrat him for what he has
done for penasco.

I have to go with the dawg on this one....Elixir is shoulder-to-shoulder on one night....I don't believe it is open the rest of the week....and sorry, I don't consider it an upscale place...unless you want to stand or sit around shoulder to shoulder with almost no room to move....and want to pay US prices for the drinks!

Nobody said Elixir is there to cater to you. There are other people that live in and visit RP. What about all the Mexican Nationals that are most of the tourists now anyway. Who would they rather hang out with - a bunch of old gringos that want to listen to nothing but '80s rock music - trying to relive their past?
Manny's wouldn't be open only one night a week. Open your mind - Elixir is making money the one night a week that they ARE open. Manny's would be open all day and night. What do you think the young and hip crowd does in other beach cities? They go to beach clubs like Nikki's in South Beach to hang out and be seen, drink, and dance. They spend money. Look at the hotels with all the upscale pool parties in Vegas.
You need to get out more often. The younger crowd likes to hang out in crowded places - not only does it seem "cooler", but there's a bigger selection for single people.
Also, you made my point for me about the drink prices. Try to look at this from the bar owner's point of view - not as the customer. There ARE people paying US drink prices at Elixir, so why not give them somewhere else to spend their money? Obviously they're willing to pay? I wasn't asking if you were willing to pay those prices.

You sure do have a very low opinion of many of the Americans who do visit Penasco...and have been doing so for many years.....a little snobbish, are we??...actually very insulting in your comments...if I want to "experience" the Vegas or South Beach night life...I'll visit those places...not come to Penasco. To each his own! I have no need to stroke my ego and "be seen"!
Maybe you should also hang out in Penasco when the "Mexican tourists" visit and see how much money they do spend there...and where they spend it.....definitely not at the Elixirs, etc.!!!
BTW...how do you know that Elixir is making money being open one night a week? Do you know the ownership and what their interests are? Just asking! :stir:
Have you noticed how many drinks the locals buy at places like that? They tend to buy one drink...and nurse it forever....if they want to booze it up...they head out to their vehicles and get some "top off" from there!!! When I go out drinking...I tend to be a people watcher....the things you can learn that way!

You just don't "listen" do you. I never said that I go to these places. We're talking about making money. I don't need to be seen. I sit on the beach all day long and then I'm hanging out at night watching movies usually asleep by 10:00. We're talking about what sells and what makes money and what people want now. Not what you or I want personally.
All I'm saying is that Manny's should be changing with the times - not trying to stick to a failing business model. You're obviously taking this personally. You may not want to visit places like South Beach or Vegas, but there are people who enjoy that type of place in RP - I didn't say that I was one of them, but I'm also not still listening to '80's rock.
As for Elixir - I've been there 3 times since 2008. You have to wait in line at the bar to even get a drink. If nobody is buying drinks, then what are they lined up 3-4 deep at the bar for - to ask for a napkin?????

Lets see if I have this right.... Joe lives in the past while listening to 80's rock, and you're living in a fantasy world, while watching the silver screen.

Jeez, there's no reasoning with you people. You guys just want to be sarcastic, bitter, and complain all the time about how things used to be and not look ahead. Good luck with that.

If it's anything that I took personally it is your GENERALIZATION of the gringos who used to, or still do go to Penasco and also to Manny's! And what's wrong with 80's rock? It may not be my taste in music....but at least it is music!!!:moon:
You should read my sig....I think that it applies here....on opinions....that is, and your take on business models that do or don't work in Penasco!
If there are people several deep trying to buy drinks at Elixir....they're not drinking! Maybe the bartenders are super slow? I don't ever recall seeing people 3 deep at Mannys during the craziest spring breaks waiting to get served! Whatever happened to the "other" upscale "for the locals" place in the Mirador area....BUMAYE? Is it still open? And if so, how often? I believe it followed "your" business model years ago!
Lets see if I have this right.... Joe lives in the past while listening to 80's rock, and you're living in a fantasy world, while watching the silver screen.
Sorry Kenny...you got that wrong...I can tolerate 80's rock (not like some other people posting) :stir:...but I enjoy country!
Jeez, there's no reasoning with you people. You guys just want to be sarcastic, bitter, and complain all the time about how things used to be and not look ahead. Good luck with that.
Again..."opinions" are coming into play...from someone who characterizes oneself as a person who's in bed by 10....obviously you spend a lot of time in the local establishments (Penasco)!

Uh huh . . . yeah, the bartenders are slow. So if you know so much about Elixir I guess you're hanging out there?

I already told you - I've been to Elixir 3 times. Went to the BooBar last time I was there. If you're into the oldies music at BooBar then fine - that's not my thing. I don't have to like what you like, just like you don't have to like what other people enjoy.

Please don't "ass"ume that you know me...or my likes or dislikes.....
Also don't throw your "opinions" on business models that may or may not work in Penasco as being "gospel" and putting down those who may disagree with you!

Oldies music?....I'll have to mention that to Jose the next time I'm down....but if that's oldies to you, what are you doing in bed by 10pm, you young whipper snapper??? Maybe you should move to Sun City!:stir:

You're just crazy - who said anything about my opinions being "gospel". Trying something new sure beats doing the same old thing that's not working and looking for a different results.

Wow, I'm impressed that you know "Jose". Yeah, Van Morrison is oldies music. Not everybody wants to hear that. That's why it would be nice if there were some diversity in RP nightlife.
You just keep on arguing - that's all you guys do on this board no matter what the subject happens to be. Anybody with a new idea comes along and you guys do nothing but trash talk everybody. Real productive. Like I said before - good luck with that Mr. McBitterson.

Nothing to be impressed about...I've known Jose for several years...from when he was bartending at the old Margaritavilla...also a place that was probably not "cool" enough for you! Definitely not South Beach or Vegas style!
And when it comes to "arguing"...which are you? the kettle or the pot?

I'd have to disagree about Manny's during their heyday, as there were plenty of nights where it took more than 10 or 15 minutes to get a drink, though it felt like 30! Even long lines getting into the men's room. Of course this was past midnight, but you couldn't even park within a mile of the Mirador strip.
Everyone is making good points, but the real key to a successful club/bar is to have different theme nights in order to survive. One of the most successful, longest-standing clubs in Tucson, Club Congress, is a perfect example. '80s Nights on Mondays for almost 20 years, modern dance DJs on Saturday's (BANG!BANG!), anything goes on Thursdays (the funky, hip Optimist Club, going on 6+ years) and live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or more if it involves a traveling act. Sundays are Karaoke, which some of us hate, but hey--there's always a Karaoke crowd. Not saying any of these nights would work in Penasco--or Manny's, for that matter--but you can't please everyone every night. Mix it up. Speaking specifically about Manny's, one could do several reoccurring nightly themes and still keep the Beach Club flavor. Look at how nice The Reef's remodel turned out! (And can anyone chime in on whether that does any business with the local fresas?)
That said, I don't blame most businesses down there closing down early (or for the whole day) mid-week, especially during non-peak months.

I submit to you that Mannys IS looking ahead with the cock fighting thing. May not be the future that YOU see for them, though.

What do you think is happening? They are changing, just not in the way you prefer them to.

And so, we have reached the end of your arguments, so now we go to the insults.
