Hi gang,
My 15 year old computer is acting wacky. It is going in for a look see tomorrow and if it is done for, I won't have a new one until Sat. I'll be able to look in from work the rest of this week but won't be back until Sat. afternoon on the new one.
Oh come on Chari....you remember those little boxes that you hooked up to a phone line "back in the day"....back before Al Gore invented the internet.....when everything was text based....programs were 64k or smaller, computers only had 640K in memory.....and it took a half hour to download a file that was only 100k in size????? Baud was synonymous with bits per second....while now we're in the mega bits per second.....
Oh forgot....that 15 yr. old computer was really an old 1985 IBM PC you inherited from someone....right???? Does it still have 5 1/4 floppy drives????:stir:
Lj, my buddy just bought a toshiba with an intel I3 4gb 640 with the verizon hot spot for $543 out the door. saw a nice notebook was $499 now for $299 at best buy.
Call me and I will more than happy to help you out.
Man, and I thought I was cheap only replacing my home desktop system every 6 or 7 years! I buy the best top-of-the-line system I can buy when I purchase and by the end of that timeframe, it's an absolute clunker. Technology marches on.
I do also have an up-to-date laptop. I remember paying over $2000 for my 1st 386 MediaBook laptop back in the day and it didn't even have a color screen! Now, you can pick up a laptop that has about a zillion times the horsepower of that old MediaBook for well under $500. I think the wife paid $399 for a nice Dell laptop at Walmart late last year.
I went to Verizon to get a mifi (because I live out in the sticks and don't have internet) and if I upgraded to the $199 box plus what ever the plan cost a month I think $38. they gave me a notebook for free... Now if only my old eyes could see the screen it would be great...
Joe, you crack me up! I have no idea what you said..........I did not inherit this computer. I bought it new. I don't know if it has floppy drives or not......
Check out the website www.gotapex.com you can find great deals each week.....and then there is Fry's Electronics...I think their ad comes out Wed. for the sales starting on Friday.
I just use a laptop with an additional flat screen monitor, although I have an older (not ancient, Chari) desktop in the house as a backup!

My gosh Rob....doesn't Qwest have service out there in the boonies???? I even have it in what used to be Old Fartsville

Playa, PM me your number.......
Just sent you a pm with #. Sure hope Kenny isn't reading this!
:deadhorse:Only 15 years old !!!! did the crank er' up' handle on the side finally break ????? Super glue it back on chari. I bought a new laptop 2 months ago. Toshiba Satellite, win.7 2gb ddr2 ram, 250 GB Hard drive.... at walmart for $278.... you cant even get half the parts for that price ! There almost disposable units now...Used a few years then replace it.

Hey Tomcat/Chari....the processor on that toshiba is only a single core....if all you're going to be using the computer for is internet/email/wordprocessing...it's perfectly adequate. The windows version is also only 32 bit, versus 64 bit. Most of the computers now are dual or quad core (multiple processors on the chip).....even the little netbooks have gone to dual core processors. Look at it this way....the horsepower of this laptop is more than the mainframe they had in my college back in the late 60's/early 70's!!!! It's a pretty good deal, considering the netbooks are going for about $300....with less speed and much smaller screens....and the netbooks don't usually have dvd burners.
What will chari need in a laptop ? I am using this laptop right now and it does everything I need it to do... Oh well it is a option to be considered...I mean a person has to ask themselves what will I be using the laptop for ????? then decide....

The two other thoughts I had before I bought this computer was MONEY !! I not making much of that lately and 2nd thought was what will be on the market in three years from now as laptop really are not worth fixing anymore ???? This laptop will more the likely be on its way out as far as technoloy marches forward.... So if money is not concern then have at it and get a cool laptop that is very upgradable.... I really think the basic users like chari and me with a small demand on functions is turning into a type of disposable laptop market !!!! I wouldn't be surprised if this same laptop was $200 next year !!!!!! How much does windows 7 upgrade cost today ???

One third the cost is for windows 7 ??? well that's going to depend on the cost of that laptop.... I saw windows 7 home version upgrade for $150 dollars right next to this laptop ! If your poor like me right now then that means I bought a laptop for $75.... There are many ways to decide what to buy just like a car BUT I am just talking low budget get the job done now. If I open my wallet and it was full I would be off in another direction and playing with many cool options and new tech stuff. But that's not were I am at now so excuse me for my low budget :get er done" cable guy attitude now... like I said its a option joe... just a option....

Tomcat....probably 1/3 of the cost of the laptop is for Windows 7...but yes, computers are getting to the "disposable"/appliance stage.

Tom...I was referring to the cost of the laptop you linked to ($278).....you're also not getting an "upgrade" version when you buy a new computer....although the OEMs get a deep discount.
Your wallet controls what you can buy, i really don't care for the amd chips but with the economy the way it is, screaming deal on that toshiba, BTW Tomcat how much
was that birthday cake you had at the boo bar?
You lost me Joe ? I had a laptop with problems that has vista as its operating system... the more i inquired the more I heard vista is not a good operating system ! So what i meant was if I considered to upgrade to windows 7 then it would be almost as much money as buying this new laptop with windows 7 included ! sorry my thoughts and post dont always match what I trying to share :aagh::aagh::aagh:
