well unlike last time bouy weather was rite on the money this time. we left the marina at about 8:00 and made bait bait in about 45 min. We had a group of 5 people consisting of scott and i, my girlfriend and dylon and Dave from al capones pizza and beer. we headed to a closer reef around the 12mile mark. scott hooked up with a pinto in the 1st 2 minutes of dropping down while i was tieing a few rigs. we then decided to head to the 18 mile. not a good idea. we had to go at a slow speed as the swells were building. Dylon was the 1st to start making chum and rhonda was only minutes behind. so we decided to call it a day for they were both in pretty bad shape.
The following day we decided to just make a guys trip. and we headed strait for the 18 mile. we ended up with 4 gulf grouper a pinto and some how managed a yellow tail and a wsb. what a great trip. looking forward to the summer months. as the fishing should only get better. can anyone name that small fish on the cooler?
Yeah, the water was a bit rough on Sat. Ithrough out some chum also. Good job guys, that little one I believe is a grouper also (coney) or cabrilla roja? Are the spots blue?????
Good job guys! that fish on the cooler is a yellow snapper. they are usually found a little more to the south but I have seen them in the rocky point area many times before, especially in el nino years. Strange thing is, those mountains in the background in the pic with the grouper dont look like any land marks I remember at the 18 mile reef. Reminds me more of a couple good spots I know at the sand dunes area....hmmmmmm.

I think you guys will be alright. That ride is a long way to the sand dunes which will keep most boats away. Add to that the fact that fishing that close to the mouth of the estuary can be very dangerous unless you time the tides just right. If you hit the tide wrong, you could find yourself high and dry on a sandbar. Did you guys make it all the way into the estuary or did you have to turn around? from the looks of the landmarks in that pic whith the white sea bass it looks like you were pretty close to making it in. The corvina fishing inside the estuary can be incredible if you time the tide just right.
Wahoo, I think you have it right on that snapper, upon another look, it definately is not a yellow snapper and that pic of the lane snapper in your link looks like the fish in Dougs picture.

did not have a scale handy. i got it back on the boat now. try not to leave with out it. brought it on a buddys boat and forgot it. it seems that is the way it goes when you need something you never have it.
