Thanksgiving dayRocky Point and missing kayakers
Cory and kim Allen went out On their kayaks with a 14-year-old daughter yesterday.
They were staying in Encanto.
It got really windy and the dad brought the daughter into sure and then went back out to kayak and help the mom come back in.
That was the last they have been seen.
The authorities down here will not start searching for three days apparently.
Tom Boggess took his boat out and is attempting to just sort of go up and down the ocean between here and bird island.
We are trying to drive out by the Sandspit to see if maybe they blew to shore last night by chance.
The 14 year old is by herself now, Jonette walked down to stay with her.
I’m telling you because I’m wondering if you know anybody else with boats down here or a capabilities to drive razors or a quads up and down the beaches out there.
Maybe you could just share the word with some of the people that are down here in Rocky Point
Received this from a friend this morning. Any help would be appreciated.

My wife just told me about it.
I hope someone down there on a boat can track the wind direction and tide from time they went missing.
Don't count on the police or navy. Maybe ask some of the local fishermen that know the area.
Hope someone finds them.
About 12 years ago, 2 college freshmen staying at our house in Miramar were lost on our kayak. We were planning on having airplanes look for them, drones would work now. We got a call they landed at Laguna spit, 20 miles away the next morning. Prayers for the 2 people
As of 7 this morning still no sign of them. I live in Playa Encanto and there were strong off shore winds all day blowing from n/ne which would have pushed the kayaks away from shore. They are organizing a volunteer search this morning. Please keep these two in your thoughts and prayers.

Where’s JJ and his raptor? Make up a ton of ground cruising that Ford.
Bob I thought the same thing. If ever there was a day the old dickheads skill set , knowledge of the area that is pretty much second to only TJ and his grit would have come in handy……
The fishermen at Santo Tomas fish camp are aware of the situation and no one knows the currents and wind patterns out there like they do. It was a good day to look so really bad news we are still looking

Dear Ones:
We lived across the street from Corey and Sue and her children are beloved by us, as they are. We will come from Indiana as soon as we are told when and what is needed. I don't know if the grandparents are there yet (from CA and Korea). Bruce and I would be more than willing to come to Flag and stay/help in any way we can. My daughter sent me the news clip an hour or so ago and I can barely type coherently. If there is someone coordinating efforts of any kind; could we please be added to the listserve? We love this family as our own and are both in shock. If we need to come and help with Pax and Lux please ask us to come. We will! ( abgriffin89@gmail.com )

Where’s JJ and his raptor? Make up a ton of ground cruising that Ford.
JJ is currently building up his new silver October birthday Jeep JK 2 door Willys Wheeler Edition that will relieve his 2006 Jeep TJ Rubicon of it's Rocky Point service of more than sixteen years of rough hot beach, deep sand and rocky desert environs.
Wife Diane's 2017 Ford Raptor is in the deep/sleep/protected mode awaiting the switch to her new soon to be delivered 2023 Ford Raptor R as a major chunk of trade in value so from here on out no more dings, desert racing stripes, 135 mph runs on the Coastal Hwy and six foot jumps in the Baja Mode.
Sorry to read about those poor lost souls that took their plastic blow-moulded Kai-Yaqui's way beyond expected service and safety conditions.
I would say by now IF they are still alive, without cold weather and cold water survival gear, the search would logically be around Guardian Angel Island or Saint Esteban Island.

Does anyone know how long and how hard the wind blew on Thanksgiving. That might help figure out where to look . I was reading about Northerners : “
How does it get to Mexico? When the Plateau High is centered in the eastern part of the plateau, this cold, dry mass of air similarly rushes downward and outward. But this time it flows south through the Salton Sea Trough and the Colorado River Valley, then out onto the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. The areas first affected are San Felipe, Puerto Peasco and Desemboque.
Channeled between Bajas mountainous spine and the Sonora Mountains on the mainland, the Norther continues flowing down the Sea of Cortez, northwest to southeast, drawn like a magnet toward the areas of low pressure at the equator.
A strong Norther can blast down the entire 700-nautical-mile length of the Sea of Cortez and be felt at Los Frailes on the Baja side, at Isla Isabela off the mainland Nayarit side and even by yatistas making the 275-mile crossing between Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.
Yep ,too cheap to pay parking fee and fishing in a lake boat. Mason the Lobos guy who had his Tacoma jacked a few years ago took one of those to Angel Island on the fish/camp trip I was on 9 years ago.His expat South African neighbor who can fix anything kept it afloat!

Winds were NNW gusting to 60km or 40MPH. Offshore.
There’s 2 planes flying with their call signs on searching.
The Cessna 210 is flying in the middle of gulf about 40 south of Penasco the other a piper is flying the coast going south, the piper left in the last hour. The Cessna trail shows it been up couple hours 800 ft 125 kts.
I suspect all others don’t have their call sign on.
I live in Encanto. In looking at my weather station history on Thursday afternoon winds averaged 18mph with gusts up to 33 mph. It was pretty much like that all day.
Maru and I have now confirmed the body has been 100 percent identified as Mrs .Allen.
This morning around 9 Am sun the 27 of Nov a body was spotted floating 8 miles off of Mayan place by a ponga boat. The Marines were call out to retrieve the body. A boat from our search team was sent out to confirm but missed the boat. We asked for photos to confirm the body.
The Navy, police or our search team received the photos to confirm.
However the news was leaked before anything was confirmed by all agencies working together.
At approximately 3:15 today our search team was notified the sister in law Nina Allen confirmed it was Mrs. Allen
We called our boats back from the area .
We send our condolences to the family but can assure them we have not stop the search for Corey Allen . k
At this moment we still have planes in the air and more help coming tonight and tomorrow.
I would ask the community to please check with Maru or myself any questions about the on going search as to avoid unnecessary drama. We need to stay on the front line to process facts for the search teams.
The update will be aired on channel 3,news.
Thank you for everyone helping and supporting us .
God speed.

Such a tragic situation. So sad.
Im not an expert on drowning, however it seems like she would have submerged after 3 days instead of being found floating ?
Any word she was found wearing a life jacket and hence probably died from the elements/ hypothermia ?
Also, any word their kayaks were found or recovered ? They will definitely show up at some point I would assume
Ever try to swim with a "life jacket" correctly fitted ???????
It is virtually impossible.
Flotation devices keep your head above the water. They are brightly colored for a reason. You just wait and pray for someone to come along and maybe find you.
Tides in the Sea of Cortez flow in a generally North and South flow. The wind on Thanksgiving was from the North to the South and in the afternoon the tide was outgoing. I am sitting on my porch in Playa Encanto looking across the beach at the ocean and it is almost due South. It seems very plausible that anything adrift out from Playa Encanto could end up almost due South.
We have always noticed an incoming tide pulls you west and outgoing pulls you east, I help the kids launch and paddle into the current so that when you are tired you can easily make it back. In toward Mannys and out toward Playa Encanto is the rule we use.
Tragic story. It seems like this situation has happened too often in Rocky Point over the years. The extreme receding tides and south blowing wind conditions at certain times of the day and year can create really dangerous conditions for swimmers and kayaks that are unique to the area. Visitors can get so determined to use their water toys after hauling them down for their vacation, even if the conditions aren't right. The ocean and wind conditions are so fickle - one day the ocean is like glass and the next day its raging with whitecaps and crashing waves. And, the wind can change on a dime too, often in the late morning and early afternoon when a calm day suddenly turns windy. It's interesting that this same situation occurred almost exactly to the day last year off of Las Conchas when four kayakers were rescued by the Marinas offshore on November 25, 2021. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PuertoPenasco/permalink/10159732149439002/
There’s a pic of the kayaks on Facebook. One was located near San Jorge.
Thanks, Playa. Based on the GPS coordinates in that report (if I'm reading the report from Periodico De Frente correctly), the larger gray kayak was found fairly close to Mayan Palace, about 1.7 miles south of the shore, and about 8 miles east of their Playa Encanto launch. The other smaller green kayak was found about 20 miles south of Playa Encanto, and about 1.3 miles east of San Jorge Island. In both cases, is seems that both kayaks were recovered east of Playa Encanto, one fairly close to shore and the other pretty far south. It's interesting that the kayaks were recovered several (six?) days after the search began.
The family friend running the Go Fund me for the family and search party, posted that late today they called off the official search.
After one week, the chances of finding the father are slim as JJ said. Sad situation.

Kayaks of stray tourists were located on the shores of Puerto Peñasco
The two smaller kayak-type boats that were used by the American tourist couple Corey Allen and Yeon-Su Kim, lost in the Puerto Peñasco Sea last November 24 and resulted in a woman found lifeless and body or the husband still missing, were located and placed in shelter by elements of the Secretary of Navy of this port.
It was during the afternoon yesterday Wednesday, November 30 when around 16:00 hours notice was given to municipal public security elements that a maritime unit of the Secretary of the Navy bet in this port baron in the area docks naval with two smaller kayak type boats, one grey and the other pistachio green.
According to a marine infantryman who carried out marine patrol in relation to the search for the couple of missing tourists, the same day they went out in search of the person still missing, and found in the vicinity of the Tourist mess Mayan Palace a smaller vessel named "La Faith, who first divided the kayak, gray color and license plate LPEC2100B919, made delivery of the kayak.
On its part, another smaller boat named "Isla Sonora" that was in the vicinity of San George Island, also found the other kayak, pistachio green, with license plate LPA0369B919, delivering this to elements of true.
It was revealed that these minor kayak-type boats are related to the criminal approved police report C5S/20221127/00166, in relation to two foreign tourists missing in Playa Encanto while kayaking.

The Grey one would have been his.It isn't a double which seems strange . I picture that first ride back to the beach in that wind with two people on it….been there and done that ….upside down and right side up

It’s extremely hard to speculate what really happened, I was under the impression that there was 3 kayaks.
Most males don’t wear life jackets where females do, maybe they will release more information today.

that makes more sense except carry three on a suv roof would be a hassle
As of this AM they have called off the search for the man. I’m sure boaters etc will still be on the look out
The currents around the island, especially on the outside northern edge (near the Widowmakers) are wicked as the tide changes. Once you get around the backside of the island (towards the mainland), the currents are tame and the water is settled and clearer, although the snorkeling is not as good. I've snorkeled around the backside many times, and once in a protected little cove near the north end on the outside, but generally never go in the water on the outside of the island.
( the above from a friend that goes to Bird Island on occasion) “
Q. Why does a corpse float, when a living person must exert an effort to stay afloat?
A. Dead bodies in the water usually tend to sink at first, but later they tend to float, as the post-mortem changes brought on by putrefaction produce enough gases to make them buoyant.
The average living body has a specific gravity very close to that of water, according to the outline of a forensic medicine course at the University of Dundee in Scotland.
After death, even small variations in floatability, like air caught in clothing, can affect whether a body sinks right away.
Once the body sinks and goes to the bottom, its own enzymes and internal organisms, especially anaerobic ones in the intestinal tract, gradually break down the soft tissues into liquids, salts and gases, including hydrogen sulfide, methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrogen.”
Any advice on kayaking further south? My buddy wants to try yellowtail this winter out of Kino Bay. I am a bit leery of the tides. We have peddle drive riot mako 12 kayaks. It is a very stable platform, but still? Stewart? Any other boaters that have been out down there? Would we be nuts to kayak there (taking all normal precautions)? I would also consider Libertad.

I wouldn't do it. Too far. And depending on where you are, the current freaking rips between the island and the mainland.
Consider Lobos instead. There are plenty of protected areas just south of where they launch that we've wailed on some nice size yellowtail. Almost like a big cove-type area. Jig fishing and they hit HARD!
Sometimes we had to go 40 miles to fish for yellowtail. My friend in Kino Has caught them from shore halfway to San Carlos so you might have some success down that way. Himalaya is where they camped.

The rocky beach you can camp on North of Libertad would be a good spot when the big tides are not a factor
Thank you all kindly for the advice. I have been mostly a wade and cast fisherman down there. The rip between the island and the mainland was my biggest concern. I have seen videos of people catching off of Libertad. We might have to go to San Carlos. As much as I like a good old dump of a town, Lobos is too far in that direction for me. We stayed there once and that was enough. The roving packs of dogs barking all night did me in. The garbage dump ambience was also pretty sad. Desemboque is nicer IMHO.
I wonder if they converted the Libertad power plant to NG yet? The smoke from the stacks used to hang over the future home of Liberty Cove ….what a joke that was!
Side note I am the only american at Santo Tomas today and was kayaking out to that rock pile maybe 1000 yards out to catch the Cabrilla that hang there . After a half hour I got pretty numb in the fingers and had to turn back ….
Old55 yes they did convert it. We stayed there a few days and the air was clear. It beat the heck out of Lobos.
TJ if possible tell your buddies that have stayed at Santo Tomas that Adolfo the guard and all around fixer is in the hospital with Pneumonia …. Not doing good
I was looking at Windy tonight and notices the wind pattern the takes a drifting boat out and to the south around zBird island then straight back to the coast.
The Doña Rafaela has been missing since December 11 with a crew of 6/7.
Kind of a shrimper looking boat fishing for deep water fish, lost contact where there’s no phone reception.
Hope they find her and her crew, the families are by the docks asking for help.
Apparently these fishing boats only fish a route at night for the malusa, someone put a boat up with only enough fuel to run the route till tonight with sonar but they were unable to find any whereabouts of the Doña Rafaela.
The fishermen said that the owner of the Doña Rafaela has other boats that are full of fish so they can’t go out looking.
That’s what I heard I hope I didn’t lose something in the translation but they are asking for money for fuel and someone to loan a boat so they can run that route for a couple days and then maybe.
It's Pacific Hake ( whitefish) they are after about 60 miles out they start.. here its called Merluza.. https://mexican-fish.com/pacific-hake/.. they probably run the routes at night when the fish are closer to the top.. Almost all of it is exported and hard to find in RP..
