A really BIG shark. Also hooked into a large great white at Bird Island, but he easily broke our light tackle. At least we got him to the surface and could see him.
Another oddity was a cutlass fish and a cusk eel.

Wait... there are sharks in the ocean!?!?!?
WW2 Grumman F6F Hellcat wing you can see at low tide crash site at Santo Tomas 1944….befor the 50 cal machine gun barrels were stripped…they were looking for Japanese infiltrators

Why yes, there are. But why it's unexpected is that LARGE sharks are pretty rare around Rocky Point. They've been fished out. Every once in a blue moon Shawno, myself, or others will hook up with a mako while fishing the deep reefs. But they nearly always break off.
To my point, in over 40 years of fishing Rocky Point, I've caught and landed exactly ONE large shark. So yeah, they tend to be "unexpected." Certain times of the year you can catch small black tips that congregate on some reefs, but that's nothing like hooking into a behemoth. I'll have to dig out the pics when I'm on the computer.
And I've caught nearly every kind of fish that swims near Rocky Point, including sailfish, marlin, dorado, grouper, monster black seabass, pintos, huge halibut, white sea bass, totauva... you name it.
Always an adventure!

We took a panga out of San Jorge. Was back in the early 90s. We were fishing in a shallow channel at the north end of the island. Dropped a hand line with sand bass head on it for bait. Line got bumped, gently pulled it up by hand and up pops a great white nearly as long as the panga. He rolled over and looked at us, bumped the panga a couple of times, then threw his head, cut the line and sank back out of sight.
What do great whites eat? Sea lions, mostly. What is Bird Island loaded with? Yup, sea lions. That's why I don't do the swim with sea lions thing at Bird Island.
You were with me when we caught the huge shark near Witch's Hat. Quite the day!

Oddity, hmmm I'd have to say the California Scorpion fish from boat and Pelican, always surprised by Parrot fish too.

In 1974 I went out with some panga fishermen near Santo Tomas (the location of the lighthouse at Jaguey before it was built). There were about 50 sharks in the panga from 10 to 40 lbs by my estimate. They were using gill nets and were targeting sharks. Some sand sharks, some hammerheads, and some black tip. I used to catch one in that size range on spoons from the beach every few years. I have not seen any sharks in years.

20 mph winds plus from the south today at ST tj…..not Corvina weather!
