Folks who speak in absolute terms tend to have minimal credibility so you're correct. Unfortunately, you seem to fall into that category as well. Your posts in this thread infer that there is 0% corruption. Just drive the speed limit and you'll be fine is your typical refrain. Clearly that's not the case.
You're effectively calling a lot folks on this forum a liar. Or you're calling people they trust liars. Odd why you'd choose to join a community, informal as it is, only to try and discredit everyone. Sure I'd imagine some people aren't owning up to their mistakes, but you're dismissing most everyone.
What's interesting is that with your own words you're supporting the rampant corruption narrative. You said earlier that whenever you drive through town you go nice and slow while others are riding your ass. Some of those folks behind you are locals. They're tailgating you because they know that it's not them the cops are targeting. If they can speed with impunity because the cops are targeting out-of-towners that's sorta textbook corruption. Locals zooming around is a recurring theme in a lot of the stories here. It happens in the States too but based on the anecdotal evidence from this community, it's a significant issue in Sonoyta.
Again you can trust in people or you can go through life the much sadder route.
Incorrect. Read my posts. I have explicitly stated there certainly are corrupt Mexican cops. There are corrupt American cops. There is corruption EVERYWHERE. To deny that is to deny reality. The problem is most people on these boards have no problem breaking traffic laws but get enraged when caught. Then the narrative shifts to 'all cops are corrupt'. They are all on the take etc. Consider foreigners speeding thru your town, endangering everyone. You would want and expect the police to try and curb that behavior. It is not different in Sonoyta or Mayberry USA.
P.S. The reason most locals get away with breaking traffic laws is the system is set up with a cash punishment. Most locals don't have a pot to piss in so the cops don't waste their time.

That's fair. The only point I'd disagree with you on is that in Mayberry (I've been through many a town) the cops target you as an out of towner for speeding but the chances they say you didn't legally stop at a stop sign when you know you did are slim to none. I'm guessing the chances are materially higher in Sonoyta based on the testimonials here.
So to clarify your typical refrain again, it's "when you come to Sonoyta slow down, enjoy life, be considerate....but you might still get busted by lying ass policia because everyone in town is piss poor."
For what it's worth, posted on a FB Rocky Point group page today-
"We came back yesterday with no problems. We were searched going into MX but not on our return.
We gassed up in Why and met a resident of Sonyota who warned us of the Police Corruption in Sonoyta.
Wear your masks at all times in the vehicles while driving in town.
Do not stop and shop in Sonoyta.
Do not speed, there is no wiggle room. The posted speed is the posted speed in KPH. They will ticket for ANYTHING over the posted speed.
Stop at all ALTOS, even if they don't look real or are hand painted.
They target US plated cars. He said they leave residents alone. Each officer has to pay the Mayor $300 cash for using the squad car for his shift. So the police are collecting money to pay and line their pockets."
Our 3 - 20-26 year old kids came down, they got the red light, got a quick search including the engine compartment.
Other than that easy peasy, did the 23 mph crawl and 3-5 count at the stop signs.
I guess our family has the lucky look about us.
We got stopped at a “checkpoint” on March 19, 2021, and the corrupt pos cop tried to get us for no seatbelts but we all had them on. He then said we had to have our masks on ALL THE TIME, even while driving. He asked my husband for license and registration. He gave it to him and the pos cop said we had to give him 1000 pesos ($100) or he would keep license and registration. After husband tried to reason with pos cop, I offered him $60... he said $80...I said, I only have $60. He took it and let us go.
Unbelievably corrupt!!
Next time, I will break in to a fit of nagging rage until pos cop can’t take it anymore and let’s us go out sympathy for my husband...lol!
Follow-up report, our 4 kids came down in 2 different cars and on different days, zero issues both directions, all did the 23mph crawl.
The 3 younger ones went home today and just showed their passports without even a question about what they were bringing back.
Again super easy.

I went through at 8 am today heading north. Approaching town I was by myself. So I pulled over 10 km outside and waited until a convoy of cars traveling 80 mph passed me. I pulled in behind them. Immediately before the hill with the 40 kph sign at top they all slowed down to 20 mph and crested the hill. I then crested it at 20 mph, last in line and concerned they might pick me off. Fortunately, at that moment a large pickup crested behind me, obviously slowing but still well over 25 mph at the moment it crossed the plane of the sign. I watched the cop point the radar gun at it while the driver and passenger winced in my rear view. We went went pass the cop as he lit up and pulled in behind the truck. At the moment the cop pulled out, a second cop car advanced to take his place, like taxis at the airport awaiting their turn.
Went down Friday through Lukeville, took the route across the big wash to Corregidora Street coming out to Highway 2 near the Oxxo and got through with no problems. Returned Monday taking the same route in reverse, again no problems. Crawled slowly under 25 mph the whole way. Saw one car pulled over near the west edge of town.
We drove back today, entered Sonoyta at 3PM, we saw one police car on the east side of the road about 5 blocks from the border.
Pretty quiet, absent were the usual group looking to wash your windows and the people on crutches and in wheel chairs looking for $$.
There was an official Red cross collection station at the south end of town. that's the 1st time I have seen them set-up in a long time.
We did the usual 23 mph crawl with no issues.
I drove back north yesterday and went through at about 8. For maybe the first time I saw no traps and no one pulled over. I saw two nice state police cars pulling into a parking lot and a decrepit local car driving around on some task.
I have read here and on Facebook of people saying they would just drive away and leave their license with the police. Has anyone actually done this? I'm not certain why people feel the police won't chase them down and things would get worse.

Joan C can't believe her ears!!! You don't say, the mayor is in on the taking?! That's pry the first time that's ever happened in Mexico... damn, I guess the country is going to hell in a hand basket.
I like how not one person commented on that fact. Convenient how QUEEN didn't comment on that small relevant information. Because it doesn't fit the narrative. I mean, why would the mayor be paid $300 per use of the car to enforce laws that they're already paid to enforce????
INCENTIVE changes PSYCHOLOGY. Psychology changes behavior... Do we really need to explain nuance of the world to Queen and the goody goodies??? Next, I'll have to explain why marijuana is safe and it's actually alcohol they've been lied to and mislead about all of THERE (their) lives...

So wait a minute. If every Sonoyta police officer is corrupt, and this board seems to think so, why would they actually waste their time using a radar gun and an actual law breaker before pulling them over? It doesn't pass the smell taste. A corrupt officer would just make up any old infraction and stop any old car any old time........

In my state of Nevada, you can go online and request a duplicate license for $18, and it will be mailed to your home. There doesn't seem to be any requirement that you attest it was lost or stolen; it seems you can just get "an extra." If I were going to Rocky Point all the time, I would get a duplicate license and let the cop take it, if that's what it came to. (I'd even let them keep my original without having a back up if it were necessary.) I would also let them take the license and keep it if it were one of those deals where you have to go down to the station to get it. However, I would NOT drive away from a Mexican traffic stop. They probably have a car waiting on the other side of town for people who do that kind of stuff, and in all honesty, I would not be surprised if those motorists are subject to "extra judicial" types of punishment, ranging from auto confiscation to physical abuse. Driving away from a traffic stop is disrespectful, and an invitation to be shot at if they think you are armed, dangerous, carrying drugs or whatever.
We we're stopped going exactly 38kph, the Sonoyta cop showed us a radar gun with 57kph displayed. I laughed and said "No lo creo".
I mentioned Mordida es malo, and No lo creo a few times and he let us go. They must have radar displays they can program or put on
hold from somebody previously going 57kph.

I have read other people saying the radar gun said 57! It's probably stuck there.
It’s the crawl, stopping for eternity at stop signs and maybe saying a prayer. In general we make it with no issues-as most do but the impunity and wanton disrespect for any rule of law is a big reason Mexico is where it is at. Every single act of corruption hurts everyone in the country.

It depends on the situation. For example I went through this one time in Santa Ana, Sonora going to the veternians office. I parked my car, got out and started walking. All of a sudden 3 police walk up behind us and say we did a U turn. They took my license and gave me a ticket with no specific amount on it. They told me to go down to the police station later and pay it to get my license back. After we got done at the Vet we took off back to Magdalena. By Monday I got a new license in Tucson. Since then I have been back to Santa Ana many times with a different car now.
I have read here and on Facebook of people saying they would just drive away and leave their license with the police. Has anyone actually done this? I'm not certain why people feel the police won't chase them down and things would get worse.
I have thought about doing this. I only bring color copies of my titles to Mexico, maybe a laminated color copy of my drivers license will help. The best is to let my wife drive, then when she gets pulled over for doing nothing she rips on the officers until they back away, and they have backed down several times. I think it is a man-woman thing.
Yep, I have seen a couple of times where the women driving was ripping into the Sonoyta Police officer and they seemed to want no part of that.
One time was with my wife along with me saying "No lo creo". (I don't think so) They let us go.
But a few times I've seen a woman and guys giving $$ to the police.
They seem to like scared, intimated people to steal from.

Apparently they don't like handicaps either. I scare EVERYONE in Mexico trying to do THERE (their) job. The Guardia National, as soon as they see the hand control the whole, "can you get out of the car" part goes away immediately followed by a "ok" have a good day. Pretty sure I wrote about it on one of the threads here about a year or two ago. We crossed at about 1030pm one night with the YET SKY in tow and got yanked by an oncoming police car right at the 80kph sign just west of the buen viaje sign leaving Sonoyta. The guy says I was going 61mph which is coincidentally the number that used to be set at on the gun for FAKE stops back in 2012 or around that time frame. That is also documented on this forum. I had my head glued to the speedometer as always and hadn't cracked 45kph as we had just passed the last part of town. 61 was such an unreasonable stretch that I absolutely lost my mind. Wouldn't be the first time that I've shared my mind with a law enforcement officer. All in all after 5 minutes of them asking to get out of the car and me essentially saying no thank you in a very upset and verbally frustrated way they gave up.
Fortunately we were on our way to RP. Unfortunately, now, I had to be SENTENCED by Claudia for the next 30 minutes of her yelling at me that I went too far with those cops and that she was scared that they were going to do something with us. So to be honest, in retrospect, the $40 bribe would have made my life easier. Claudia is an absolute PITBULL when she's angry...

It seems like many females are Pitbull's when angry, When my wife is angry, I want to stay away. They seem to get worse with age.
We had no problems with the police this weekend in Sonoyta. My wife filmed the entire crawl through Sonoyta. We saw others get stopped though that were legitimately going way over the limit.

Careful now. A certain someone might call you out as a bold faced liar ;) My family flew into PHX last week and we took the Head Out to Rocky Point shuttle down to the Grand Mayan. Solid reco for them. I opted not to drive because I can't trust myself to stay cool if my integrity is called into question by a peacekeeper. The irony is I'd be more than willing to drop a $20 on a policia or anyone who came to the window just asking for a donation. Just don't masquerade it as a false accusation. Anyways, my shuttle driver who was doing a 2X down and back that day said that crap happens all the time. I did see two cars pulled over, both with AZ plates, but I can't say if they deserved it or not. Wouldn't be surprised either way really. On the way back I saw an AZ plate crawling along with a 5th wheel and a line of cars literally 20 deep behind him. He was clearly not taking any chances. Hope he made it through unscathed. Anyways, thanks to the folks on this forum for helping me make an informed decision. Interweb 1 - Corrupt Police 0.
The day's of a $20 bill taking care of the alleged infraction are long gone. Today's payoff asking prices start at $80.
Typically $100-$140, but sometimes they will negotiate for what's in your wallet if less than their asking price.
I wish Sonoyta would just charge a $10 per car entry fee for us Gringo's and hopefully the Police, handicapped pan handlers
would get a cut and visitors would actually want to stop for a visit even a taco or 2.

I would 100% donate $10 every trip IMMEDIATELY to never be harassed by the Sonoyta police for the rest of my life. If money is what they want, let me do you a favor and ZELLE you that $7 passage fee before I even get there.
Left to head home at 5 today. We were followed by Sonoyta PD from the time we entered town until we passed the "Wendys hamburguesas". The kids all turned their cell phones towards the police car, waving and smiling along with filming....they were not pleased but we were creeping along....gps with dash camera was on too. They turned around and pulled over a lifted CA plate truck immediately. All in all good trip town was very busy.

By creeping along you mean obeying the speed limit? And because you were not breaking traffic laws you didn't get stopped or ticketed. Unthinkable!
The police harassment in Sonoyta means no stopping for tacos or beer in Sonoyta-the cops are corrupt, period, and it is hurting everyone’s economy. Filming works well, having your wife bitch them out works better. Maybe we all should just drive 4MPH through town and back up traffic, do this all of the time.-be such a big hassle that the locals complain that we all are going too slow. Jam it down their own throats In a legal manner. Something needs to happen.
Glad I was wearing a mask coming through sonoita today, so the P.O.S who tried claiming I ran stop sign couldn't see the sh_t eating grin I had when I pointed out dash cam. Just got it on Wed. Thanks to everyone for the advice on that one
Please feel free to spin it as you see fit...we have been stopped 3 different times and shook down for doing the same speed.
Uh huh. People breaking the law are loathe to admit guilt. Much easier to claim the police are corrupt. May I suggest you start obeying the law and you won't get 'shook down'?

Hey Queenie, your shtick is getting rather old. It's time to give it a rest.
Our son went back to Phx today, at 10am had a 15 minute wait, he saw 2 Sonoyta police cars sitting off the road.
He got a thorough check by the CBP agents. He said there was a heavy Park ranger, Sheriff presence all the way
to Why and Sheriff's to Ajo. He thought they were baiting people by riding on their bumpers

So the American cops are all corrupt and bad too? I thought we were only demonizing the Mexican police on this thread?
My daughter and son in law got the $140 welcome returning to the US. Guess what. They were speeding!
Came in a little too hot just before the red cross donation. I dont think that will happen again
Here is something for future reference, supposedly if you go to the station and pay the fine is reduced by 50%. Never pay the Police directly.
Here is some info from the Sonoyta Police Commander. Police chief Miguel Angel Trujillo this number is to his cellphone +5218116602530. He said if you get stopped to go to the police station to pay the fine.
If the police officer won't let you pay at the station to call him in the presence of the police officer that way he can talk to them.
Maybe if everyone stops paying the cops, threads like this will go away.
So via a connection with a Penasco developer I had the chance to talk to Chief Trujillo today. He seems very sincere in trying to clean things up in Sonoyta. Only time will tell how successful he is, but I believe the guy is truly trying.

We have heard this so many times before for 33+ years. Nothing will actually ever change. Same old BS , I'm sure.
As a former political journalist here in Tucson, this incident chills me to the bone. Especially the timing.
I don't think anyone read it because nobody commented on why I posted it. When shit is happening to journalists in Sonoyta, it's certainly possible for it to happen to ANYONE that gets out of line. YO SE MI LUGAR y yo seguire en la lina... The only other thing I will say is that I almost felt that "the men" that were asking us if we wanted to go to the front of the line were getting progressively more frustrated with me every time I said no thank you. There was clearly a "supervisor" that was there watching the low level gentlemen ask each car if they wanted to go. Not sure why but he insisted on hanging out next to us as the line crept forward. I bet we turned down 4 or 5 propositions to contribute to the "cause". Not the cause I'm looking to donate to unfortunately and with respect of course. Every answer was, "no thank you" but the "pit boss" pulled up along side of the passenger window after being next to us for about 20 minutes and we had to tell him personally, "no thank you" and he was visibly frustrated as he shook his head no and then finally pulled away. It was unnerving to say the least. It was like we had a big target on our vehicle because of the jet ski or something??? I don't know but to think there were more than a few CHIVO DE CUERNOS around us in those "businessmen's" cars I was starting to think that the answer should have been YES just to keep them happy. It's one of those things, like when you were young and your Italian grandfather that grew up through the 30's depression said, "eat all of your food" he wasn't asking and "no" or not eating everything on your plate wasn't an option...
So not stopping at a stop sign is $19 US and the cops try and get $100 or more on the spot?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK????! Speeding is twice as much as a DUI. Why wouldn't it be?!
I saw the fine list for Penasco's fines and they use a similar pricing scheme. It really makes no sense. If the officer tells
you to pay him, just keep insisting to pay at the station.

Joe, just ask Queen. He knows the answer to everything.
And never forget, if you obey the law, you won’t ever need to know the corrupt Sonoyta pricing menu

I'm kind of upset at myself for not knowing these figures sooner. Why in the hell would I sit there and argue with a guy for $19?! For 100 you have to stab me but 19?! Damn... I played myself! Kind of makes sense now why they prey on you HARD late at night on Saturdays... Court is pry closed Sunday and they leverage that against your will. Mother FRICKEN PYSCHOLOGY baby!!! Damn... I love it!
Well, to be fair, not everything, but certainly more than you. I love my fans!
I will go one on one with you in Trivia and DESTROY you. I know this because you don't read and facts don't matter so how could you answer trivia questions when reality isn't reality?! It's like you're from another dimension in a parallel universe...

Aren't you the morons rallying against CANCEL CULTURE while simultaneously CANCELLING one of your own for not going along with an irrational and ridiculous LIE????
Tell me more about how smart you are. There are credible reports that Trump couldn't even point out countries of the world on a map... Neither could Sarah Palin and you pry would have silver tongued her I bet...
Well this has certainly gone off the rails, now we're talking about 2 really old Presidents, One frail and the other one fat.
The frail one will be leading us forward from the fat old ones cluster f-bomb.
My retirement account under the frail one has made my future retirement much brighter.
Back to Sonoyta, I'll let you know how that goes when I travel thru Sonoyta on Friday morning.

Deal. I challenge you to a 100 yard dash. Wheelchairs and walkers not allowed.
It's amazing how many posts on here deteriorate in to sheer stupidity and name calling or become irrelevantly political.
Not really... seems par for the course. Have you ever been on FB?! Jesus christ! Talk about a shit show... This is Sesame Street compared to the sheer ignorance and hatred on FB.
I did finally see something "official" posted on FB Cholla Bay page about not paying MORDIDA and not to speed to help cut down on the extreme police "activity" for fear of using a more descriptive word. So obviously it's gotten to a point now where it's happening to a lot of people.
Follow up to my previous post. We came down to Cholla today, lot's of Friday traffic going south. Arrived at the border at 10AM, 2 lanes open going into Mexico, RH lane which we were in, they were waving all cars thru. Waited 2-3 minutes cruised thru town going 35KPH. We saw ONE police car
coming from the main road thru town, we took the 19 de Sept turn off. FYI the 2nd stop sign going south is gone at this intersection.
You still need to stop. Weather is great, temp is 82 with 50% humidity and a slight breeze. Sat is going to get pretty windy per Windyty.
FYI for those coming down today, I was told there is a 3 Plus mile line at the border, google also seez it's a really long line.
Well this has certainly gone off the rails, now we're talking about 2 really old Presidents, One frail and the other one fat.
The frail one will be leading us forward from the fat old ones cluster f-bomb.
{My retirement account under the frail one has made my future retirement much brighter.} Please explain how it made it brighter?
Back to Sonoyta, I'll let you know how that goes when I travel thru Sonoyta on Friday morning.
I'm not trying to make this political.
Well a 25-30% increase in my IRA's value sure helps and a whole lot less WTF comments/ideas from the Agent Orange former Prez.
My future just went from a candle bright to a 250 watt spot light in the last 6 months.
The frail Prez isn't even close to perfect but a whole lot easier to tolerate the the previous mess. IMHO.
I don't really care who's the Preez, as long as it wasn't the previous one. End of story.

I crossed yesterday afternoon and definitely saw a diminished presence. No hiding in the bushes and no one pulled over. Gringos were crawling and the locals speeding. Maybe the new chief made a difference.

Gotta love the disingenuousness of your comment, “I’m not trying to make this political.”
Good for you on your IRA. An easy accomplishment when trillions of printed dollars flood the economy. Enjoy the ride down when the printing presses halt and the market tanks.
Not to mention your IRA purchasing power after you pay the taxes on your withdrawal with taxes going up and inflation out of control. You’ll be lucky if your gains even equal the increased taxes and inflation.
Just to be clear, I’m not trying to make this political.
Hopefully I'll have enough $$ to pay for all the inflation, taxes etc. If not, I'll adjust my lifestyle.
At the end of the day I'll always have enough $$ to enjoy my life.
So I'm in a good place.
As far as politics go, If you have been paying attention all along you would have noticed,
it really doesn't matter what party is in control, the economy seems to prosper, companies prosper and
the stock market keeps advancing. People investing in good companies prosper.
When inflation rears it's ugly head, you sometimes need to add another zero to things price wise.
If you're lucky enough to own a house or 2 or 3 just say thank you for the inflation.
Maybe you can tell I'm a glass more than half full kind of person, try it, you might like thinking that way.
Enjoy your day.

So Broken since you said "My future just went from a candle bright to a 250 watt spot light in the last 6 months." Your now saying that your going to have to adjust your lifestyle because you IRA's are not doing that great. Are you going from a 250 watt spot light to a match flicker.
I don't know anyone that's doing great right now. And it really does matter what party is in control, look what is happening. That's why building material's are sky rocketing in price and still going up.
Gas is going up and shortages. Wait until summer time your really going to see some sh!t go down. I'm not going to say anything more about it, but remember I said it first on this forum..
The only way your not going to notice it is if you have a blindfold on and ear plugs in.
I guess you missed the IF Not part of my statement. I am very confident with my financial strategy.
But, I do have a plan B because as confident as I am, you can't always plan for the unseen things that get in the way.
All of the shortages we are seeing is because of all the producers shutting everything down from Covid closures due to lack of demand.
They didn't anticipate how quickly everything started explode from the pent up demand and will take time to catch up.
We survived the gas shortages in the 70's, the massive inflation in the late 70's-80's. This time won't be much different
other than making for big headlines.
Time to kick this can down the road.
my son pulled over coming back yesterday in sonoyta. Hes drove thru a 1000 times and knows all about the pos cops. gets pulled over for so call speeding. Told me he was doing under 20. Cop told him to give him 165. He said no. Cop says lets go to the station and you will pay 165 there. He says ok lets go. Cop then gets really angry at him and stay police station closed give me 100. He says no but now his girlfriend is getting scared. Cop yells at him give me 100. My son says here is 60 go away. Cop Snatched his money yelled at them and went away.
He and his girlfriend wont ever go back now and will share there story with a TON of people.

I've reposted this:
Here is something for future reference, supposedly if you go to the station and pay the fine is reduced by 50%. Never pay the Police directly.
Here is some info from the Sonoyta Police Commander. Police chief Miguel Angel Trujillo this number is to his cellphone +5218116602530. He said if you get stopped to go to the police station to pay the fine.
If the police officer won't let you pay at the station to call him in the presence of the police officer that way he can talk to them.
Maybe if everyone stops paying the cops, threads like this will go away.

Well tell me what your frail Prez has done to bump your IRA 25 to 30% in his first 100 days Now that fuel is up 25% lumber 300% 6 trillion in new debt. and his new taxes and inflation will eat up any gains you think you have. Not a single piece of legislation passed. What policies has he enacted that had any impact on your IRA?
Agent Orange is the reason your IRA increased and why your taxes were low.
I found out this morning I had to drive to my new house in Flagstaff to meet a contractor. Hit the Sonyota city limits at 9 am exactly. I did not see a single cop. I met Brokenwave for the first time last night. My experience with my retirement accounts in recent months has been very similar to his.
