Hi all

We are thinking of taking our first trip to Rocky Point this Monday. Are there inexpensive motels there? All I can find online are the mega resorts and condos. Hoping to find something in the under $40 range.

thanks for the help!!

Last time I stayed there it was about $50/night but the Motel Senorial on Calle 13 isn't bad. It's about a block from the beach and right in the middle of the action.

Contact " Seadweller " He does bookings for places to stay , fishing and more. Barb, his wife also takes people clamming if the tide is good.

Hey Sub What kind of action ? I had heard that anykind of action was available down there.

Welcome to the forum, and I would be careful staying at Calle 13, specially if you like to go for a walk at night, nott the best place to be unless there are lots of people around, like during weekends, I would suggest The Mirador Village hotel 18888345850, Costa Elegante 011526383836690, Playa Inn 18009528426, all these are around 45 to 50 per night and the one I like the most 'cause its history and location is Posada La Roca, 011526383833199,in the old Port and one block from all the bars and restaurants at the malecon, there prices range from 25 to 35 per night.
If you are from Tucson then you can take rockypointrides.com shuttle service and you would not have to drive and enjoy the scenery!!
A must while in Rocky Point is to enjoy and relax!!

About the Posada La Roca...http://www.penasco.com/08stone.html... but all the suggestions that Inka gave are good. The last time I was down I stayed at the Playa Inn, and have for years.
The suggestion to contact seadweller was a good one.

OK we are in at the Posada La Roca for a couple of nights...hope I can find it LOL never have driven outside the US before either. Again thanks for all the help and suggestions I'll give details of our experience when we get back!

WATCH YOUR SPEED IN TOWNS. As you drive the locals will be passing you like you are crazy but do not follow their lead. Do the posted KPH and let them pass. When on the main road between Sonoita and Rocky Point follow someone, NOT CLOSE, and use them as bait. You can run 65 + with no problem.
Sorry I forgot to welcome you to the forum. Have a great time. You can buy your Mexican Insurance on line from Rosey and print it out at home. She is safe and a great gal.

It is very easy to find, stay in the same road you drove into town, Benito Juarez Blvd, stay on it all the way, you will get to a traffic light, a think it is the fifth one, that has a big sign on top that says "to Las Conchas" stay in the right lane and continue in that same street, it will curve to your right, just keep going pass the little speed bumps in the road then it is going to turn a little to the left, slow down, you will come to a fork in the street, at that fork in between the 2 streets is Posada La Roca, across from Portofino Restaurant, it has a big sign, can not miss it, say Hello to Jorge and Eloisa and enjoy your stay!!! they are great people!!!!

We're assuming you have passports or passport cards. It will make returning much easier.
InkaRoads
If you do not have your passport or pass card make sure you have a copy of your b-day certificate or a notirized copy of it and a pic id with the same name as possible!!

You will be happy with "The Rock". Good place to experience Old Port, and management is good, Parking is on the street so be prepared.
Roberto
La Roca is good, stayed there many nights. Family owned and operated. Check out the Granada del Mar for your next visit. It is the ONLY hotel that you step out of your room onto the beach. Stroll down the hill from La Roca and eat at Mary's, the best fresh shrimp you'll find.

Well La Roca is on the other side of the street from Portofino but not directly across. You will pass Portofino first, on the right, then within the next block or so, La Roca just after the curve in the road, on the corner on left side of the street. You will have to turn left at that intersection and park on the street there. There is an airplane on the roof, so you cant miss it. I think his son does the ultralights on Sandy Beach.

Hey Ink, have you gotten lost coming from Arizona much!!:cruisin::cruisin:

Not really, a couple of trips ago I took Indian 15 route to go to Casa Grande, from Quijotoa and although it was a beautiful drive and the road is very nice the speed limit was only 55mph and the road is build for easily 75 mph, very wide and the inclination on the turns are just like a race truck, nice and smooth too!! however did not got lost!! :eek3:

Most of the time you can get behind a border patrol truck and roll across the res at 65 to 70 I got behind one of then comming back from RP that was traveling so fast I did not even want to keep up with him. He had to have going at least 90.

Funny you say that Bill, on our way to Casa Grande we were behind one that was so slow I decided to pass it then as soon as I passed it she decided that I could not be in front and passed me again and slowed down way below the speed limit, then we arrived to the check point and I could see her explaining to their bodies about my passing her as they were looking back and forth to her an me, then as we left the check point I passed it again and proceed to go a little faster and away from it to avoid her trying to do it again and was able to get away from her, even my customers were bit@#$g at her. :eek3:

Just don't do it thru Organ Pipe.....I had one of the Park Rangers pull me over for doing 4 miles over the limit......fortunately just gave me a warning.....

Well we made it back.

The drive from Tucson was pleasant, the desert is in full bloom. My wife never even opened her laptop she enjoyed the ride so much. Topped off the tank in Why and headed to the border and were waved right through. The speed limits right across the border are ridiculously slow and they seemed to be out in full swing to enforce it in spots. Saw several locals getting pulled over but no US tags. Still made my way though town at a snails pace. Ran 60 to 65 the rest of the way to RP without any problems. Directions to the hotel where spot on and we drove right to it.

We stayed at La Roca and loved it. Room was small but for the price, the ambiance and the location it could not be beat. Not a 4 star by any means but clean and comfortable and lovely people running the place. The street parking was a bit of a concern at first but they have reserved spaces right out front and after getting to know the hood a bit felt very comfortable there.

Wandered down the hill the one short block to the seaside and went straight to Marys for a bite and a beer. OMG best shrimp tacos I have ever had. Sitting upstairs with a full belly, an ice cold cervesa and a wonderful view I felt like I was on vacation finally.

Felt the need to be accosted after a while and did some shopping. Of course the time share guys where all over us but they where not as aggressive nor as rude as the ones in other Mexican resorts areas we have been too. Bought $20 worth of junk for $50 so felt pretty good about ourselves. Was hoping to find some nice cigars and had no luck at all. Walked up and down the Malacon then took a nap. Went out later that night and went drinking and had a great time at the BooBar.

Tuesday we chartered a boat and went fishing $75 US for the two of us. It was very windy and the sea was rough so we could not get out to the deep areas but we still reeled in several fish and had a lot of fun. Thank goodness for Dramamine. Went back and got cleaned up then went back down the hill for dinner and drinks. Dinner again at Marys but Tuesday night most of the bars are closed so it turned out to be an early night.

Next day we checked out and bought several pounds of shrimp and scallops and headed back towards the states. Stopped at a little place called Rosies for breakfast which was pretty average but very generous portions. Had to wait maybe 20 minutes to get across the border. I handed him our passports and he looked around then slammed his hand down on the car door and said "why are you so nervous!"
To which I replied that I wasn't until he did that. He laughed, I felt better and he waived us through. Nice leisurely drive back to Tucson and Rosie finally got her laptop out around Three Corners.

Overall really enjoyed RP. Quaint, nice people, felt safe, great food. Wish the public beach was a little easier to get too. We are already planning our next little escape and this time we are going to take our son and his fiancee so they can have a quick place to get away too.

Thanks to everyone on this board for the warm welcome and all the ideas and advice, it certainly made our trip easier and better.

It's kinda hard not to enjoy yourself in Rocky Point... we're happy to hear you had a fun time and are planning a return trip with your family... like my friend Homero at the Blue Marlin Restaurant likes to say "Welcome Home"
