I'm just jonesing for some flounder - is there anywhere in the Phoenix area that has flounder?
I've tried the frozen flounder filets at Fry's - they're from China and just not the same.
frozen would be ok of the quality is there...
thanks so much.
Try Ranch Market. I'm sure I have seen it in there. It's just like being in Ley only bigger and cleaner. They have everything from Mexico! I don't know where they are on the east side but I go to the one on 16th st. and Roosevelt, in the old K Mart building, that's how big it is. Take some time 'cause you'll want to walk around. :D
Lee Lee's Market on Warner and Dobson has just about any type of fish you would want as well as not ever want. Once I overcome the odor of the place I really am fascinated by the offerings they have. The Chinese market on 40th street and the 101 is decent as well for fish.
Yeah that was the place I was referring to. I get the 101 and 202 names confused. I did not realize they had closed shop. I liked hitting the store for back up bait on my way home from work before fishing trips. It was a great bait shop.
If there's a strong fishy smell (the odor of decaying fish), in a market, I usually just turn around and walk out. If any kind of fish has a "fishy" odor to it, it's decaying.
bahia -
good point about the smell, but you really need to smell the fish you want to buy -
every fish market I have ever been in smells fishy.
also need to watch for the ammonia smell around shrimp, not a good smell.
thanks

The fish smells just fine. It's the market that smells like fish! Only because they sell so much of it. Throw in a few other indiscernable smells from various flavors around the world and you have the essence of Lee Lee Market captured and ready to bottle for perfume.

Ain't that the truth! It's like taking an around the world trip in 30 minutes. I love going there, especially because I can see over everyone.
It is possible to have a fish market without smelling fishy. Safeway or Smith's wouldn't allow it. I've even detected a slight odor to their fish from time to time. I'm pretty fussy about the fish I eat. If I can't buy it fresh or bring it home myself, I'd rather have beans and rice.
I believe the Chinese Market (99 Ranch Market) on 44th and the 202 is still open. At least there are a lot of vehicles in front of the place every day.
Concerning the fishy smell, I imagine much of the odor comes from the trimmings and innards of the mass amount of fish they prepare for customers. The fish looks well cared for but I imagine the trimmings are decomposing and that is the odor that is detected.
If the trimmings and entrails are stinking, they ought to throw 'em out and keep all surfaces wiped clean. It is possible to have a clean smelling fish market. When I find one, I go back because I love fresh fish. Unfortunately 'Vegas and Winchester Bay are a little far for you guys, so you'll have to find your own.
Coincidentally, I ordered a Mahi Mahi (dorado) fillet from a pretty nice restaraunt in Las Vegas recently. It had the "fishy" smell to it. The chef apologized and got me a nice big grouper steak. The smell will even linger after it's cooked. No thanks...
PS The chef brought the grouper fillet out and let me smell it bfore he prepared it. It was delicious.
well, I'm off to el rancho at 16th street this afternoon - hoping to find my flounder.
I'm also looking for more of the sweeten I use in my margs - the jarabe natural syrup.
I have heard about an agave syrup that sounds similar, just don't know where to find it.
anyone familiar with that?
Chari - thanks!
I brought a big cooler loaded with blue ice to work today, so I can have perishables in th etruck for my way home doing errands. was told to go on Friday afternoon, that Sat mornings can be pretty busy.....
Oh, it'll be busy tonight! They have dances there in the restaurant and radio stations do live broadcasts. It's busy all the time, even at 10 on Sat. night! It's so worth it, tho! Enjoy!
flounder report -
the flounder at the ranch market at 16th st and Roosevelt is excellent!
at 3.99/lb - same as in RP. meat was fresh and firm, displayed on ice, with no stinky smell.
trimmed up nicely and made some great tacos.
got a bit over whelmed there - forgot to look for the jarabe syrup or agave nectar - next time.
i passed on the produce - I found the little produce market in Guadalupe has great roma tomatoes and chiles for cheaper than any other store around my area.
we have owned our home about a mile east of there for over 20 years, have never tried it -
ofter wondered, but never went for it.
will give it try - any menu recommendations?

Howdy, neighbor! I'm in "Tempe Royal Estates" on McKemy St. between Hardy and Kyrene.
Cool place, eh, Joe? It's like Super Ley on Steroids! The first time I went in there I'm sure everyone was laughing at me 'cause I was walking around like a tourist! Mouth hanging open, looking at everything, trying to figure out what some of the produce was, etc. The gelatin cakes are cool! And tasty, too. I'm glad you got your fix.
yep -
next time I'll have a list - forgot to look for the Jarabe syrup, and agave nectar.
got by the food court area and was about paralyzed by all the choices.
looked at a camarones+avocado ceviche that looked great in the counter, tried to regain focus and stick to my task of the flounder, then got the heck out of there before I bought up the
place and ate it right there. food looks and smells great.
thanks for the great tip - now I can buy fresh flounder on my way home from work - sweetness!
